Created in 1995, the Mixed Unit of Research project 5609 (ESID) is the heiress of the Associated Research unit 779 (1979) and 1019 (1989).

The creation of this team was a true bet in a not very inclined university community to deal with the military thing.

Of a strictly military History in the beginning, the field of investigation widened very quickly by taking as topic the Man confronted with the military institution in times of peace as in time of war, the team offered the possibility of a multiple research: studies of the conscription, the combatants, the memory, the representations, such phenomena of crises and conflicts from which the current evolution in the world came to point out the importance.

The studies centered at the beginning on France and Western Europe extended with the arrival from new researchers to other geographical surfaces: Mediterranean basin, Africa, Asia. This extension required the taking into account of new parameters the such the identity minorities or phenomena, the intra-official wars where the non-observance of the right of the war is so frequent.

The contribution of researchers coming from other disciplines, economists, lawyers, philosophers, experts of the ground, embodies the will to fit in the multi-field field.

Since 2006 this laboratory is directed by Mr. Professor Frederic Rousseau.
