Statare

The Statares were Swedish farm laborers subjected to a particular status, near to the Servage.

Born in the middle of the 18th century, this system consisted in paying the workmen in kind (the lodging and cover, often of poor quality). The latter had the right to leave their employment only during the last week of October. The system reached its apogee at the end of the 19th century, then was gradually made obsolete by mechanization. The statute of statare was abolished in October 1945, date on which an agreement was concluded between Swedish association from the country workers and the owners of the country and forest exploitations.

Their living conditions were very hard, and were described by several Swedish writers resulting from this medium.
