Stari Most
The Stari Most (“the old bridge” in Bosnien) of Mostar is a bridge of the 16th century which connects the two parts of this town of Bosnia-Herzégovine (croato-Moslem woman federation). It makes it possible to pass from a bank to the other of the river Neretva.
It was built in 1565 by the architect Mimar Hajrudin, raises of the Othoman architect Sinan. The bridge consists of only one arch in back of 27 m of range, 4 m of width and 30 m length ass. It dominates the river a 29 meters height sometimes more because of the hydroelectric station located over Neretva. Two strengthened towers protected it: the Helebija tower on Right Bank and the lathe Tared on left bank, both dating from the 17th century.
The architecture of this bridge, the technique used at the time of its construction is surprising, conferring a great solidity to him. It was such as it resisted during centuries all the conflicts, except the last. During the war of Bosnia (1992-1995), in 1993, the Croatian allies and Bosnian clashed during a little less than one year with Mostar. The Old Bridge was destroyed by the Croatian forces of the HVO.
Classified with the world heritage of UNESCO, it was rebuilt under the aegis of this organization. The 1.088 stones were cut according to the original techniques. The rebuilding cost approximately 12 million euros and was financed by Turkey. Its inauguration Friday July 22nd 2004 was placed under the idea of the reconciliation of the two Bosnian and Croatian communities, even if rancours and suspicions remain perceptible.
