The star with six branches was also used as symbol to the Christians until the 7th century after J.C. It represents the reconciliation between the divine Trinity and the human trinity.
The significance of the shield of David wants that when David was sought by Saül, it hid in a cave where, when the soldiers entered, a spider would have woven a fabric taking the shape of a star with six branches hiding David. This star was also present on the shield of the soldiers at the time of all the battles gained by Israel over its enemies. The six points at the ends of star and the 6 points of intersection of the triangles could also represent the provision by Josué Twelve tribes of Israel, unified under the royalty of David, on the Ground of Israel around Jerusalem.
