Genesis of the series

Conceived in 1991, little before the death of Gene Roddenberry, DS9 started whereas Star Trek: The new generation was always in hand.

As from the fifth season, the series is centered on the war against the Dominion.

Specificities of DS9

DS9 is the first series of Star Trek not to be created by Gene Roddenberry. It is also the first series of Star Trek whose history is not based on the voyage of exploration. DS9 introduces into Star Trek intrigues being held on several episodes (up to 10). DS9 develops much more the recurring characters that the other series (certain species appeared in TNG are primarily developed in DS9 ). Certain main characters of DS9 are not members of Starfleet.

Contrary to the preceding series, DS9 viol often established rules by Roddenberry Gene, such as the prohibition of conflicts between two main characters. The stories are also often darker, the war is more present there under its various aspects, and the main characters made or make criminal acts (murder, inculpations the innocent ones, planet poisoning).

Topics of the series

DSN tackles many subjects which often superimpose the ones with the others. The scenario writers underlined the great freedom of treatment they had, which explains why this series of Star Trek is often regarded as most adult.

Religion

It is the topic which impregnates the very whole series, because of the deeply religious character of the Bajoran S, the presence of quasi-divine entities in the vortex which seems to want to control the destiny of Bajor, and of the role of emissary of Benjamin Sisko, whose destiny is one of the keys of all the history.

The series more particularly tackles the questions of the Foi and the Fanatisme, of the scientific interpretation of the religious phenomena, the interferences between religious and political capacities, of the Secte S heretics.

Religion and Science

The opposition between the religious of Bajor and that, scientific point of view, of Starfleet, is incarnated in the character of Benjamin Sisko, first of all skeptic with regard to the entities of the Vortex, then divided between its Owe and its Foi.

This opposition also takes the form of a conflict between the religious authorities of Bajor and the will of Keiko O' Brien, botanist, to give courses to all the children of Deep Space Nine. Wishing to learn to the children the scientific point of view according to which the Prophets are foreign entities like other while respecting the beliefs bajorannes, she sees herself confronting with the refusal of Kai to place these two points of view on the same plan.

Religion and capacity

Théodicée and armageddon
The topic of the Hérésie takes a new dimension in the episode 7-  9 ( the Worship - Covenant ), when Dukat proclaims emissary Pah-wraith, entities imprisoned in the caves of Bajor, and considered as demon S by Bajorans. Although the honesty of the faith of Dukat is called into question by Kira Nerys, this one formulates the theological problem of théodicée, problem which is essential on Bajorans which doubts the intentions of the Prophets: so indeed did the Prophets are gods who take care on Bajor, why allow that Bajor is occupied and that million Bajorens is exterminated?

Gul Dukat: “Did you ever ask for yourselves why the Prophets did not do anything when Cardassia invaded Bajor? Did you ever wonder how they could let your people suffer? ”

Kira Nerys: “The ways of the Prophets are sometimes impenetrable. ”
Gul Dukat: “By saying these words, do you feel how much they sound hollow? Not, there is a much better explanation. A perfectly logical explanation. Truths gods of Bajor are Pah-wraiths, not the Prophets. They were driven out celestial Temple because they wanted to deal with Bajorans. Their only crime was to be concerned with your people. But they could not help it, because they lost the battle and had to flee. ”

The fight of the entities, the Prophet S and the Pah-wraith, give place to a first armageddon in the episode 6-21 the Day of the judgment , combat which will be stopped by Kai Winn. Starting from the revelation of Dukat, the fight of the good and bad gods becomes the background of the war against the Dominion, whose outcome takes the form of a armageddon of the Quadrant Alpha.

Exile

Several characters, of which certain principal, are in situation of exile, or are banished during the series. It is the case of Garak and Odo which both lives during all the series well off their people, before finding it in the last episode.

Loneliness and the ostracism which the beings considered as abnormal undergo are the topics of several episodes around the character of Julian Bashir, a genetically improved human being.

Reception

Criticisms

The opinions of the fans of Star Trek in connection with the series are divided. Some think that it does not respect the vision of future Roddenberry the Gene, where the man improves without-cease. Others, on the contrary, think that this universe was too “black and white”, and that DS9 brings “gray”. To quote Benjamin Sisko: “It is easy to be a saint with the paradise” ( It' S easy to Be has holy in paradise ). But, by considering the oddment, one notes that the vision of Roddenberry is respected strictly, since the Federation leaves the war reinforced and related in a narrower way on the Klingon S and the Romulien S; the Founders, Masters of the Dominion, receive Odo in the Great Bond, which lets suppose that they will give up their desire of hegemony; Cardassia, devastated, sees its destroyed authoritative political system, and must set out again on new bases; the culture ferengie is entirely reformed by Large Nagus, which abolishes the exploitation of the workers and the inequalities between men and women.

The series is often compared with Babylon 5 , series also occurring on a space station, from where a ground for dispute eternal between fans to know which copied the other.
