Star Academy

Star Academy is a series of Télé reality produced by the Productions J and diffused with the Quebec. Adaptation of the French Star Academy, it puts in competition candidates from 18 to 30 years wanting to become Chanteur S.

The first season proceeded at the winter 2003 on the waves of VAT. The second and third seasons took place at the winter 2004 and the autumn 2005. Recently, VAT announced that it will present a fourth season to the autumn 2008 or the winter 2009 rightly that the stimulating usual one, Julie Snyder, cannot animate two emissions at the same time.

For the three editions, Julie Snyder is stimulating weekly official receptions and Pascale Wilhelmy animates the thirty minutes daily programs (Monday to Thursday).

Scenario

14 finalists are isolated in the residence from fire Pierre Péladeau, with Holy-Adele in the area of the Laurentides, with the Quebec. Each week, they follow courses of Chant, Diction, Théâtre, Danse, physical Conditionnement and exchange with known personalities of the artistic world.

An evaluation in song takes place every week, during which the professors endanger three candidates who must, in order to prove their value, to occur on scene at the time of the weekly spectacle diffused on television. Two people are saved: one thanks to the votes of the public, the other thanks to the votes of the members of the Academy.

At the end of the 9 weeks, a great finale opposing a man and a woman crowns the big winner of the Star Academy, this one (or this one) seeing itself granting the funds to prepare an album.

Origins

The name was francized for the Québécois adaptation, especially due to the local importance put on the respect and promotion of the French language.

One finds a small difference, but notable, between the French and Québécois format in the selection of the candidates. Each week, in the French version, the public and the judges vote to eliminate one from the competitors “in danger”. The result is announced on line, on the plate, with dislodged and the televiewers.

Adopted for the Québécois version with the whole beginning, it was modified following the protests: he was seen like a cruel treatment towards dislodged. The singer Daniel Boucher even left the plate of one of the first emissions to the semi-official reception because of this selection. The producers allow the televiewers and the members of the Academy to vote for the candidates whom they want to select. The results are still announced on line, on the plate of the weekly official reception.

In 2004, the candidates and the teaching staff of the Academy voted in order to save one of both remaining participant, the other having been saved by the public. Since 2005, only the committee of hearings, are Stephan Laporte, Bill St-Onge and Dominique Savoy, votes to save a candidate.

Special requests

Several of the participants of editions 2003,2004 and 2005 took part in special the Demandes emission. This emission was produced in order to emphasize the talents of singers and organizers of certain participants.

Critical

Star Académie was criticized as being the perfect example of the strategies of convergence and horizontal Intégration installation by Quebecor after the acquisition of network VAT. The contents relating to the emission were exploited on several platforms had by the group (the Newspaper of Montreal, magazine 7 days, Canoë gate, etc). The promotion of the emission was very present in all the components of the group and the leading contents were very largely favorable there.

Some also criticized the commercial exploitation of the emission, in particular the expenses of 1$ to vote and the reservation of a majority of the contents of the Web site to paying members. At the time of the edition 2005, part of the profits generated by the process of vote was versed at organizations of charity.

Moreover, criticisms related to the “machine to stars instantaneous” who is the emission. This protest movement was very present in the artistic medium. It attenuated at the time of the second and third seasons. Several artists of reputation then agreed to be associated with the emission which is now perceived more like one contest of artistic talent than an emission of traditional TV-reality.

Star apoplexy

In 2005, documentary realized by Jean-Louis Tremblay tried to make the light on the phenomenon of convergence which surrounded, in particular, the phenomenon Star Academy.

This documentary heading Star-Apoplexy: The experiment of convergence , made state of several judged phenomena doubtful moralements.

Criticisms made at the place of Star academy are numerous. One reproaches in particular Quebecor for making an excessive press coverage with the assistance the subsidiary companies of Quebecor Média. These subsidiary companies gather amongst other things: Group VAT, several magazines and daily newspapers ( Newspaper of Montreal, Newspaper of Quebec, 7 Days, Echoes high-speed motorboat, Last hour, TV hebdo ), Vidéotron and the Archambault stores. The reproaches are especially carried out around a confusion of the kinds. The documentary one states amongst other things that Star Academy was introduced in an excessive way in the news bulletins of the rooms of news of group VAT like in the daily newspapers of the group such: the newspaper of Montreal . The documentary one makes to also state of a certain censure at the place criticisms of Star Academy. One notes between-others the absence of press coverage at the time of a dispute during the turning of a report of group VAT on Star Academy in a secondary school, as well as the absence of press coverage at the time the entartage of president de Québecor Pierre-Karl Péladeau.

Several specialists and personalities one taken part in turning of documentary, in particular: Florian Sauvageau, Martin Leclerc, Pop-Tart, Élaine Ayotte, Pierre Falardeau, Emile Girard, Sebastien Paddle, Zoltan Buki, Francis Descôteaux, Biz, Yves Lambert, Sylvie Genest, Dogs Dirty, Deno Amodéo, Andréanne Denis and Claude Rajotte.
