StarDict

StarDict is an interface making it possible to consult Dictionnaire S off line. It is a free software distributed under License LPG and available for Linux, Windows, FreeBSD and Solaris.

A portable version exists here.

StarDict dictionaries and installation

StarDict does not comprise at the base any dictionary. They should be installed oneself.

In addition to many bilingual dictionaries, less complete than those of the large publishers, StarDict can make function various dictionaries Libre S or Public domain, of which here some examples:

One can find dictionaries here (it is necessary to select the option of remote loading in StarDict format in the pull-down menu) or here (while clicking on the bonds with the top of the page). To install a dictionary under Windows, it is necessary to find, in the repertory of installation of StarDict, the sub-directory dic . One will then decompress there (by using a tool like 7-zip) the file .tar and the file .bz2 to lead with under repertory which should then comprise three files (but others will be created automatically with the first use of StarDict). The compressed files then do not have any more utility and can be unobtrusive if it is wished.

Similar interfaces

StarDict (which reads the dictionaries under format DICT) is not the only software of its category, one also finds many interfaces functioning according to the same principle. In fact the case of Babiloo (Free software also reads the dictionaries with the format DICT, whose majority or even integrality were converted with the format DICT), of Babylon (Logiciel owner having 30 days a free operational limit) and of Everest, freeware unbounded of use.
