More especially as the finished war, the soldiers return from the face, and the places are expensive. For his thirteenth birthday, his/her father offers his first Camera to him. This new activity impassions it and jazz diverts it: it takes many photographs and develops them with a friend in a darkroom. He will become the official photographer of his college, he has as an idol, it to be press photographer Arthur Fellig. Towards 16-17 years, it is pointed out by the magazine Look with its photography of a newsvendor in tears after the death of Franklin Roosevelt. The magazine engages it as independent photographer. In 1954, the Kiss of the killer ( Killer' S KIS ), its second feature-length film, film very short made in the streets of New York, tells the history of a poor boxer obliged to flee the Mafia. The history is not very original. However, this film shows the talent of Stanley Kubrick for the photography, It there proves its capacities to be played with the shade and the light which was rewarded by a Léopard for gold to the Festival for Locarno, and confirms the technical control and the originality in the scene of settling of score with the mannequins. With this film it draws the attention of James Harris, producing independent, together they found the Harris-Kubrick Pictures .
The Ultimate Raid

In 1956, from their association is born the third film from Kubrick: the Ultimate Raid ( The Killing ), once again the history is not very original, a Sniper must cut down the horse of head in a horse-race to create a diversion and thus to facilitate the holdup of the case of the bets. A Black film of steering as there were some much at the time, but Kubrick sublimates it by splitting up the history that only the voice-off makes it possible to reconstitute. This use of the flashback, very influenced by the Citizen Kane of Orson Welles, will have a strong influence on Quentin Tarantino, which as of Reservoir Dogs , will do one of its trademarks of them.
During turning, it shows with its engineering team her knowledge and its interest for photography and the Prise of sight

Paths of glory

In 1957, it directs Kirk Douglas in the film the Paths of glory ( Paths off Glory ), film on the nonsense of the war.
This film is held during the First World War. The French army decides to launch one of its units in attacks despaired against the German lines cut off to Verdun. For the example three innocent soldiers will be shot.
Harris and Kubrick send a copy of the Scénario to Kirk Douglas, which answers: Stanley, I believe that this film will not make a round, but it should absolutely be turned .
The film is made to Munich, in Bavaria, with 800 German police officers to play the French troops. One sees there appearing sequences which characterize Kubrick and which it will not cease improving thereafter, back Travelling compensated for, intelligent use of the music, complex movement of the camera without clash with the uninterrupted walk of colonel Dax in the trenches of his soldiers filmed with a Dolly, scene that one will find in the labyrinth of Shining but turned with a Steadicam (more slow movements, half-turn, etc). The scene of the song of the captive young person, played by his future wife, the German actress Christiane Susanne Harlan, watch capacity of Kubrick to film the emotion without falling into the sentimentality. For the anecdote, it meets Christiane during turning, and divorces Ruth Sobotka in 1957, to marry with Christiane in 1958. His/her brother, Jan Harlan will become the executive producer of Kubrick starting from 1975.
The film is projected with Munich on September 18th, 1957. It is perceived like a direct criticism of the French Army, near to the real events of 1917. The film receives several rewards of which the price Chevalier of the Bar . Under the pressure of associations of French and Belgian war veterans, the French government protests near the United Artists, but the Censure film does not require. In front of the extent of the protest movement, the producing S of film do not submit it to the commission of censure. The film will be projected in France only in 1972. It should be noted that many countries in Europe like Switzerland, also refuse to diffuse it.
In the work of Kubrick, it is the preferred film of Steven Spielberg.
Spartacus

Of return to the the United States, Kubrick works on the scenario of a western with like high-speed motorboat Marlon Brando. After 6 months of preparatory work, the scenario writer and the actor are annoyed. Marlon Brando large star Hollywood obtains the departure of Kubrick easily and decides to carry out only film: revenge with the two faces.
At the same time on another film Kirk Douglas, producing Acteur and principal of the péplum Hollywood IEN Spartacus , dissatisfied of the work of the Réalisateur Anthony Mann requests Kubrick to finish film. After, the business success of the film the Paths of Glory , this one accepts and finishes film; the turning lasts 167 days, divided between California and Spain for the scenes of combat turned with: 10000 observers of the Spanish army.
But of the artistic conflicts appear quickly with Kirk Douglas and the Director of the photography Russel Metty. Kubrick manages however to draw its pin from the play, it will intervene in particular on the Scénario (based on the true story of the rising of Roman slaves), which it finds moralizer and without interest. The film will have a great critical and commercial success and will gain four Oscar. A few years later, Kubrick disavows the film of which it has a bitter memory.
In the work of Kubrick, it is the most impersonal film.
The exile in London
In 1961, Kubrick exiles and leaves definitively the the United States to settle with its family in the Hertfordshire, in the suburbs of London in England. The reasons of its exile are numerous: At the beginning of the Années 1970 the British government supports cinematographic creation on its ground by generous financial aids. For the realization of its future project Lolita , Kubrick prefers to circumvent the puritan Censure and leagues American. During the turning of Lolita , the Kubrick family, finds the lifestyle English more adapted to their lifestyle and they decide to buy a large house in the north of London.Kubrick will say: Beside Hollywood, London is probably the second best place to make a film, because of the degree of technical expertise and the equipment which you find in England .
Lolita

In 1962, Kubrick carries out Lolita , its first polemical film on the English ground, according to the sulfurous novel of Vladimir Nabokov. For the drafting of the scenario, he solicits the writer; they will write together a new version of the novel. A scenario considered to be more acceptable for a commercial film, the book had been published for the first time in France like works Pornographique.
A man of ripe age James Mason taken of a burning for a teenager, Lolita, passion 12 years old in the book, 15 years in film interpreted by Sweats Lyon which will obtain the Golden Globe better actress. Peter Sellers made there a noticed interpretation.
The film, just like the novel causes the lightning of the puritan , which find film too sulfurous in spite of its setting in very pure scene, quite far away from the fantasmatic imagery and the orgies of Eyes Wide Shut , carried out thirty-seven years later, or even of explicit sexual allusions of the work of Nabokov. At the exit of film, Kubrick had recognized that if it had been able to envisage the severity of the American critics (the censure obliged it to cut scenes to the assembly and to alter certain sequences considered to be too licentious) it would have probably given up the realization of film.
The film is presented to the Festival of Venice in 1962, but criticism is disappointed. The diagram of reception of its films by the criticism whose most virulent Pauline Kael will be always the same one thereafter. A part does not make him a gift, while the other admires it.
This first polemical film, will be an Outre-Atlantique success, without any doubt nourished by the controversy. It will be the last feature film produced by Kubrick-Harris. From now produced Kubrick and only carries out its films and Warner studio will distribute them.
Doctor Folamour
See also: Doctor Folamour
In 1963, Kubrick prepares its second polemical film, Doctor Folamour or: How I learned how to cease worrying me and to like the bomb ( Dr. Strangelove gold: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Coils the Bomb ), regarded as a chief of work of black Humor.
Kubrick keeps up to date constantly with the topicality and subscribes with military and scientific reviews. It reads the novel of Peter George, Red Alert , appeared in England under the title of Two hours to doom . It thinks for a long time of a history where a nuclear war would be started either by accident, or because of the madness of a character. The novel of Peter George corresponds to her waitings. It joins Peter George and Terry Southern, author of the Scénario of Easy Rider , to prepare the scenario, and will work the photography of film with the famous photographer Weegee.
The turning begins on January 26th, 1963, with the Shepperton Studios of London, to be completed four months later. The distribution includes/understands Peter Sellers which holds the roles of the President of the United States, of Doctor Folamour, old enquiring Nazi and handicapped recruited by the American army (wink with the trajectory of several scientists Nazis, of which Werner von Braun), and of British Colonel Lionel Mandrake. A very great freedom of improvisation is left in Peter Sellers, filmed by three cameras, while the remainder of the distribution and the engineering team must observe a great rigor. The film must be concluded by a battle from tarts to the cream in the Room from War, with the President and all his military advisers. The scene is filmed, requiring weeks of turnings, but Kubrick decides to withdraw it final Montage.
Burlesque joke where the nuclear Guerre total is declared following the action of a commander become insane and of an automatic defense system, like satire of the mediums politico-soldiers, this new film leaves in full Cold war. The risk to see one of the two protagonists using the atomic weapon is high. A problem of size appears: a film carried out by Sydney Lumet, Boundary point , with Henry Founded in the main role, covering same subject, is about to leave. Kubrick brings a lawsuit for Plagiat, and obtains win. The film of Lumet will leave only in 1964. Doctor Folamour leaves on the screens on January 29th, 1964, and is nominated four times at the Oscar: better film, better realizer, better actor, better film adaptation.
2001: the odyssey of space
See also: 2001: the odyssey of space
As from this time, Kubrick works more and more slowly, pushing more and more far its perfectionism and its will from technical experimentation. Kubrick will spend five years to develop its next film 2001: the odyssey of space ( 2001: In Space Odyssey ), which, by its plastic beauty and its setting in scene, mark a turning in the world cinema, in particular in Science fiction.
For the drafting of the scenario, he solicits then the writer Arthur C. Clarke with the Sri Lanka and which wrote the Sentinel whose film is inspired.
The turning of the film, under the provisional title of Voyage beyond the stars , begins on December 29th, 1965, initially with the Shepperton studios, then continues with the Borehamwood Studios, closer to the villa where Kubrick moved in. MGM and Cinérama finances the film, whose budget rises to six million dollars. For the first time, the Cinéaste prohibits the film set to the press. What it will do systematically thereafter.
Kubrick is not a partisan of films where the decorations and the monsters are out of papier-m4ach3es or paperboards. It wishes that the decorations of its film be technically realizable in the future which it presents. It is Tom Howard, prize winner of the Oscar of the better decorations in 1946 for the robber of Baghdad , which is charged to carry out the decorations of prehistoric savanna. Wally Veevers designs the vessels and the lunar bus. One also builds a centrifugal machine of: 750000 dollars. For the special effects, Kubrick is surrounded by eminent collaborators among whom Harry Lange, former adviser of NASA, and Marvin Minsky, director of a laboratory of artificial intelligence. Wishing a vision of space far away from the cartoons and close to the scientific observations, it takes for Chef operator Geoffrey Unsworth, specialized in the Science fiction. Skilful technician, this one will use the format Super Panavision 70 and will profit from the improvement of novel methods (bases, cranes, poles, hinged jibs), allowing rotations and movements " aériens" camera: as if itself were in weightlessness. He also will adjust, on the councils and with the assistance of astronauts and specialists in the field, his lightings to be in conformity with the very precise will of the scenario writer. Turning will require four months of work for the Acteur S, and eighteen for the special effects.
For the first time, it decides to incorporate classical music: blue the Danube Beautiful of Johann Strauss, Ainsi spoke Zarathoustra about Richard Strauss, and György Ligeti for the music of the sequence of the stellar door.
Arthur C. Clarke writes a novel starting from the scenario and decides to call it 2001: the odyssey of space . Kubrick chooses this title for its film and fact pressure near the writer so that it delays the exit of his book. The reputation of Clarke is such as the book could occult film. The writer accepts and decides to dedicate his book to him. The film is a triumph whose influence is gigantic: NASA will borrow the names of Jupiter, Discovery or Ulysses for his future projects. On its side, George Lucas, realizer of Star Wars , declares after the death of Kubrick that if it had not made this film, its saga would probably not have realized to him.
Kubrick receives the Oscar of the better special effects, only and single Oscar of its career, for the quality of its work. A remarkable team helped it in this task, but as Kubrick is at the same time originator and creator of almost all the special effects of film, it is with him that one decrees the statuette. It is also the beginning of the legend which the scenario writer voluntarily will forge: that of a man who, a such computer, records an incredible quantity of information, becoming an expert of the setting in scene and having a perfect command of all the wheels.
Kubrick does not hesitate to use the last technical innovations when that serves its work: computer and frontal projection for 2001 , lighting quasi in the light of the candles thanks to an objective Zeiss developed for NASA in Barry Lyndon , or the Steadicam in Shining .
Clockwork orange
See also: Clockwork orange
Clockwork orange is a film with violence and the premonitory erotism carried out in 1971, according to a rather faithful adaptation by Kubrick which only works, of the novel of the British writer Anthony Burgess the Clockwork orange ( has Clockwork Orange ). The topic of the expensive double with Kubrick will once again be developed in this film, with Alex who represents the unconscious one of the man, who fights between the good and the evil in a world which crumbles.
With the XXIe century, in a over-populated England where the government encourages homosexuality, Alexandre Broad (Malcom Mac Dowell), the gang leader of the droogs or droogies , exerts with Sadisme a blind terror on bottom of movement of the Symphonie n° 9 of Beethoven.
In England, the film will cause a very important polemic, which will be worsened by several news items where delinquents, carrying the same costumes that Alex, state to be inspired directly by the main character of film. Initially, Kubrick does not take account of this polemic. The media, frustrated for lack of interlocutor, are turned over towards the author of the book which is only found (what particularly will irritate it) to defend a film in which it did not take part. But the controversy develops and, worried by the letters of death threats which it receives in its residence, Kubrick obliges the studio Warner to withdraw film of the screens of the the United Kingdom.
The film was elected better film of the year 1972 by the New York Film Critics Circle and will be one of largest successes of the Warner Bros in spite of his premature withdrawal of the distribution systems and being remained with the poster during sixty two weeks. The realization of film will require more than 250 days of turning in Great Britain and Germany. To find the living conditions of the time, Kubrick is compelled with a lighting of the indoor scenes almost only to the gleam of the candle, with a special objective developed for NASA. The Focal of the Objectif is opened to the maximum, but that limits considerably the Depth of field of the scene. Kubrick will also use the Zoom what causes " of aplatir" the image and to thus recreate the image of a table.
At the 18th century, the history starts at the beginning of the Seven Year old war (1756-1763), Irish young person intriguing without the penny, Redmond Barry (Ryan O' Neal) and of its rise to its forfeiture, in the sumptuous English company after its marriage with a rich person Lady (Marisa Berenson), who brings a considerable fortune and a son to him.
If Barry Lyndon film with the long and meticulous realization is greeted like a film of a great visual beauty, in particular the scenes lit with the candle, it is a commercial failure in the safe whole world in France. Criticisms will be severe towards film, considered to be too long, too slow, and tedious.
Shining
See also: Shining (film)
After the commercial failure of Barry Lyndon , Kubrick undertakes the adaptation of the novel " The Shining" of Stephen King, and carries out Shining , film of horror like the Exorcist and Halloween. The film is financially less risky, the adaptation to the cinema of the best-sellers The Shining by S. King being a pledge of quasi-success. More than any other film, Shining will consolidate its reputation of perfectionist megalomaniac . Once again Kubrick will modify the history of the book, Stephen King extremely dissatisfied, refuses to appear with the final credits of film. The film will be made to the USA for outsides, the Timberline hotel on the Hood mount in the Oregon, and to the studio Pinewood and Elstree in England for the interiors. For the most complex scenes to film (the brawl in the staircase, walk in the labyrinth, the car of Danny which traverses at any speed the stages of the hotel) Kubrick uses a news Caméra: the Steadicam.
Turning on more than 1 year, was particularly difficult for Shelley Duval. Whereas Kubrick left a certain latitude in interpretation with Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duval was to repeat from 40 to 50 times the same scene filmed in video by the realizer.

Full Metal Jacket

Kubrick, wants to make a true film of war, but not a film like Apocalypse Now or Voyage at the end of the hell or parodies it Doctor Folamour or the film Antimilitariste the Paths of glory. The symbolic system of film will be close to that of Clockwork orange or the hero, intellectually higher than his comrades, must fight between the good and the evil in a world in war. The central figure of film, the soldier Puppet (Matthew Modine) gradually will lose its heart in the United States, symbolized by the aggression of sound protected the soldier Whale (Vincent D' Onofrio) and in Vietnam by the execution without pity of a captive Vietnamese.
Kubrick will divert the spirit of the book for better imposing its own vision of the war, and the human heart, with the great dissatisfaction with the writer Gustav Hasford. But its name will be all the same present at the final credits like coscenarist. The first part of film follows the drive and the formation of a group of young American recruits in a marine camp of in Parris Island, with the the United States in 1968, during the war of the Vietnam. The second part of film proceeds with the Vietnam and shows the baptism of fire of the marines with Da-Nang then the bloody battle of the Têt in the province of Hué.
The film is entirely made in suburbs of London, some plants exotics are used as decorations of background, the scenes of combat are turned in a closed down factory, the island of Parris Island was recreated in an old British military base. Kubrick will use several times the widening of field to modify the interpretation of the spectator when he sees the scene of close then by far. The turning of film will be stopped for four months following the car accident of Lee Ermey adviser technical in its capacity as former instructor of the Corps of navy of the the United States and main actor of the first part of film. Ermey will obtain to a Golden Globe Award better actor.

More than seven years after the exit of her last film, Stanley Kubrick launches out in the adaptation of the novel the News dreamed of the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler. The Scenario, will be a very faithful adaptation of the book. In this film one finds once again what always fascinated Kubrick; the topic of the double which invades all and the loss of identity: our most intimate impulses, behind appearances . The turning lasts fifteen November 1996 at January 1998 and will block the career of Tom Cruise during three years (two years of turning, the exit of the film Mission impossible will be delayed one year).
After a confidence of his wife (Nicole Kidman), which to the temptation of another man, Doctor Harford (Tom Cruise) obsessed by this revelation failed to yield, loses itself in the night New York ease in the search of its own phantasms. A voyage enters reality and the imaginary one.

Viviane Kubrick will say:
Its character
Of a reserved nature, even timid, once installed behind its camera Kubrick became another man: he controlled the world. In spite of that it imposed the respect, imperturbable, very creative, it always ended up obtaining what it wanted. Its perfectionism is worth a megalomaniac fame of hard, coléreux man and to him. One gives a report on scenes started again nearly a hundred times, of a violent argument with Shelley Duval (heroin of Shining ) with an only aim of putting it in an intense emotional state, just like of an engineering team holding a large cover of the hours lasting under the rain not to stop a turning.Stanley Kubrick becomes a mythical character, seen like a genius Paranoïa that with a very pessimistic vision on the human nature, not leaving her ultra-protected house, a kind of fortress insuperable, girded of 80 hectares wood and protected by imposing nettings that to make her films. Insulated in its English castle, Kubrick is however not cut from there a rest of the world. Its files are monumental, when it prepares a film, Kubrick sleep the day and work during the night (jet lag with Los-Angeles obliges).
Kubrick was always reticent to discuss on its works, by fear that those are impoverished by it. The Documentary S turned on Kubrick, will be it by his/her daughter Vivian, during the turning of the film Shining : The Making off the Shining (1980) and by his/her beautiful-brother Jan Harlan Stanley Kubrick a life in image (2000) .
At the time of the presentation to the press in the Belgian city of Ghent, on October 4th, 2006, of the prestigious traditional exposition to the man and with her work, its widow Christiane declares: It is a legend created of all parts by the press.
Unfinished projects
Among the unfinished projects of Stanley Kubrick, one can quote, a film on Napoleon Bonaparte, abandoned at the request of the producing S: a monumental project (fruit thirty year old of painstaking task) which fails in 1969 for technical reasons, financial and of organization. Or Aryan Papers , a film given up not to compete with the List of Schindler of his/her friend Steven Spielberg whose subject is similar, and AD INTERIM Artificial intelligence , according to Brian Aldiss, which he entrusts to Spielberg.
Orson Welles
Orson Welles declared, in 1963: Among the young generation, Kubrick appears a giant to me . Welles was born in 1915 and Kubrick in 1928 but the two artists have many common points. Both have carried out of deeply original films, and almost the same number (13 films for Kubrick, 15 for Welles). They were tested with film of kind, and lived in Europe, with the difference close Kubrick was voluntarily exiled in England to work in peace, whereas Welles was constrained there by the force of the things; it needed to take down roles to finance its films. Both could not carry out certain in the long term projects: Don Quichotte and It' S all true , that Welles realized, never was born of the hand of their author, just like Kubrick which had to give up carrying out a film on Napoleon and another, at the beginning of the Années 1990, on the Shoah.
Citizen Kane , was one of favorite films of Kubrick.
Homages
Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg will say: Kubrick terribly misunderstood and was perceived as a recluse because he fled the press. But it was able to take down its telephone and to telephone a perfect unknown to say to him how much it had been impressed by its film. For those among us who knew it, it was a teddy bear, nice and impassioned.
Anecdote
Three months before the death of the Scenario writer, certain a Stanley Kubrick, resident with Harrow, die of an heart attack in its small apartment. It is about an impostor, Alan Conway, which, during years, was made pass for the scenario writer and thus benefitted from tens of more or less known people. It would seem that the idea fascinated Kubrick itself. Besides a film with John Malkovich recalls the history of this man: Call me Kubrick .Following a trouble of health of the chief-operator Claude Renoir on turning of the film the spy who liked me, and at the request of his friend the chief decorator Ken Adam (Barry Lindon, and Dr. Folamour), Stanley Kubrick accepts in the condition express train that its contribution remains secret, of supervising the lighting of the indoor scene of the supertanker.
