Stanislas II of Poland

Stanislas II Augustus (born Stanisław August Poniatowski ) (January 17th 1732 - February 12th 1798) was the last king independent of the union of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania ( the République of the Two Nations ) (1764 - 1795). He was the son of Stanisłas Poniatowski, palatine of Cracow (the friend and the companion of Charles XII of Sweden) and of Constance Czartoryska.

Biography

It owes its career with the influence of his uncles, powerful Czartoryskis, which sent it to Saint Petersbourg in the continuation of the ambassador of the United Kingdom Hanbury Williams. It obtains an accreditation as ambassador of Saxony what enables him to meet the queen of Russia Catherine II which entiche of this beautiful young man.

With the support of Catherine, he is elected king of the Republic of the Two Nations whereas his/her uncles would have preferred another nephew: the Prince Adam Casimir Czartoryski.

In spite of the oppositions, it tried to make its duty and of the economic reforms but he was the marionette of Catherine and he will undergo many humiliations like seeing his image withdrawn of the currency one year before his abdication. He spends the last years of his life in a sumptuous prison to Saint Petersbourg to write his memories.

Generous, speaking several languages, it was brilliant but without autonomous will under the cut of its especially female entourage.
