Biography

After studies with the University Stanford, with the University of Princeton, then with that of Istanbul, Stanford Jay Shaw is assistant at the university of Harvard (1958-1968), then professor at the University of California (1968-1992) and professor at the university Bilkent (1992-1997), in Turkey. He initially worked on the history of the the United Kingdom, then on that of the Egypt, and especially on that the Ottoman Empire and of the Turkey.

He founded the International Newspaper off Middle East Studies (published by the Presses of the university of Cambridge) in 1967 and directed it until 1980.

In 1977, following the publication of the History of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey that Stanford Jay Shaw has coƩcrit with his Turkish wife, their residence was damaged - and seriously damaged - by terrorists affiliated to the Asala. The reason is undoubtedly to seek in the fact that Stanford Jay Shaw developed in its work of historian the Turkish official position on the Armenian genocide; in particular, in its History of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey , the Shaw couple defends the thesis negationnist of the Armenian genocide: indeed, always according to Shaw, the Armenians were in the last times of the Ottoman Empire of the privileged citizens who exploited and martyrisaient the Turkish population; this irrefutable fact would thus have pushed the authorities to move the Armenian populations with an aim of installing them in more adapted sites but not as a whole to destroy the Armenian people according to an organized plan. Moreover Stanford Jay Shaw was not satisfied to present and to publish the Turkish version of the events of 1915-1916, it also used of its academic and leading influence to prevent work of its contradictors from being published in English: at the time where he was member of the reading panel of the editions of the University of California, the translation of a collection of documents proving the reality of the Armenian genocide was refused under pretext which it was about a lampoon of propaganda.
