Standing rigging

One calls standing rigging the whole of the ropes which, having for goal to consolidate the mast, remain motionless once set up and suitably stiffened.

These rope S is the Hauban S, the Galhauban S and the stay S.

Stays and galhaubans maintain the masts transversely and backwards, the stays longitudinally maintain them forwards. One respectively distinguishes stays from Bas-mât, Hune and arrow.

The stays of the Mât before are fixed on the bowsprit or at the bridge, the stays of the second mast on the first etc

One thus regards in certain cases the bowsprit as the key of the mast .
