The club
Chaired by Reto Stiffler and pulled by Michel Preud' man, the Standard of Liege evolves/moves in 2007 - 2008 in Jupiler League. The matches proceed with the Stade Maurice Dufrasne with Sclessin (agglomeration inhabitant of Li2ege), along the Meuse, vis-a-vis the factories Arcelor Mittal, giving an atmosphere particular to the enclosure.
One often calls this stage “the Hell of Sclessin” or " the cauldron of Sclessin" because the supporters of the club are famous for their enthusiasm. There exist four great groups of supporters, the “Hell-Side 81”, having a Anglo-Saxon approach, the “Extremists Inferno 96”, with the Latin character, “Kop Rouche” and “StandardLiège.Allez”, first groups of supporters founded in the Sixties and, recently, the “PHK” came to join them.
July 14th, 2007, the finance manager, Pierre François publicly announces a construction project of a new stage of at least 40.000 places in the area of Liege, by specifying that it is not possible to carry it out on the current site of the club.
The Standard is one of the most popular clubs of the country and the third club of Division 1 in term of prize list. The players of the Standard are called “Rouches” because of the color of their shirt (red, which decides “r' or che” with the accent inhabitant of Li2ege).
The Standard is the club which is in division 1 Belgian in an uninterrupted way since longest, namely since 1921. It is the 2nd Belgian club to have taken part in greatest number of finales of Coupe of Belgium (15), just behind FC Bruges (17). It is also that which lost some more (9 defeats for 5 victories).
Historical reference marks
The Standard was rested by students of the “College Saint-Were useful” of Liege in 1900, even if the official date of creation is 1898, following an administrative error. To determine the name of the club, a vote was organized and it is the " Standard" who gained it, a voice in front of the " Skill".
Its more beautiful European course took place in Coupe of the Cuts of which it disputed the final, to Barcelona, against FC Barcelona in May 1982. The Standard at the time was directed by Raymond Goethals, the meeting finished on the score from 2 to 1 in favor of the Spaniards.
A few days before this match, to make sure at the same time the championship of Belgium and to dispute the final without wounded of last minute, the Standard approaches the captain of the team of the Thor Waterschei, Roland Jansen, in order to make sure that their adversaries raise the foot at the time of the last match of championship. This scandal, revealed in 1984, implies several players of which Eric Gerets as well as the trainer, Raymond Goethals, which will emigrate in Portugal to escape a suspension.
In 1996, the club absorbs RFC Seraing (number 17), fallen in bankruptcy.
Since the business “Standard-Waterschei”, and in spite of a chaotic return to the foreground, the Standard did not gain the championship of Belgium any more, but its popularity remains intact in all the country, especially in Walloon region (only club of the south of the country to have supporters everywhere, of Mouscron (Hainaut) with Arlon while passing by Namur) and Brussels but also in Flemish Région of Coxyde to Lommel while passing by Alost. Besides one estimates the number of supporters Flemish Standard with the quarter of the usual assistance of the stage.
The Standard finishes the season 2005 - 2006 in the second place of the championship of Belgium, opening with the club the doors of the third preliminary round of the Ligue of the Champions and this for the first time of its history. This one shows an elimination against the Rumanian club of the Steaua Bucharest.
