The Standard Oil was a company of refining and distribution of Pétrole founded by John D. Rockefeller (1839 - 1937) and its associates in 1863. Wishing to extend its empire, Rockefeller amalgamated five large companies of refining, of which that of Henry Morrison Flagler, the Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler . In 1868, Standard Oil was more the oil large company world.

The foundation of the company

August 28th 1859, the first oil drilling is carried out with Titusville, Pennsylvania by the " colonel" Edwin Drake and Cleveland quickly become one of the plates hinged of the industry of refining. January 10th 1870, is rested by John D. Rockefeller, his brother William Rockefeller, Samuel Andrews, Henry Mr. Flagler, (of Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler), Stephen V. Harkness and O.B. Jennings, the joint stock company Standard Oil Company of Ohio, with the capital of a million $, of which it held 27%. A battle began soon between the trust of the producers and that of the conveyers with the Standard Oil at the head of file.

Antitrust dismantling

Since the end XIXe - beginning 20th century, the United States set up an antitrust policy to safeguard competition and to avoid unfavourable situations of revenue to the innovation and the consumers. In 1911 is created the CTF (Federal Trade Commission) which supervises the respect of the Antitrust policy. The same year takes place the Rockefeller lawsuit; its company, the Standard Oil, is fragmented in about thirty firms.
