Stan Smith
Stan Smith , born with Pasadena California the December 14th 1946, was one of the best players of the world of Tennis in first half of the Années 1970. World N°1 of end 1971 with mid- 1973, victorious of two tournaments of the large slam (US Open 1971 and Wimbledon 1972), he was also a large player of Coupe Davis, contributing to seven recoveries with the victory of the team of the the United States in the test, in particular at the time of the finale played (and gained with him only) against the Roumanians with Bucharest in October 1972. This same year, it gains Wimbledon after having beaten Ilie Năstase.
Smith played university tennis with the the University of California of the South, where it was three times All-American (better American player) and gained the simple championship NCAA in 1968 and the double titles in 1967 and 1968.
After his career of player, Smith became trainer of the United States Tennis Association.
Today, Stan Smith lives on the island of Hilton Head, South Carolina, with his wife and her 4 children, all having continued university tennis.
In its autobiography of 1979, Jack Kramer, the long-term instigator of tennis and the large player himself, arranges Smith as a one of the 21 best players of all times.
In 2005, the American journalists of Tennis Magazine elected Stan Smith with the 35e row of the “forty great champions of Tennis of these forty last years” (men and women confused), behind Hewitt (34e) and in front of Jennifer Capriati (36e).
He gave his name to the shoe Stan Smith for Adidas, of the shoes which are still popular today.
Smith was installed with the International Tennis Hall off Famed with Newport, Rhode Island in 1987.
