Stamp préoblitéré

A stamp préoblitéré is a postage stamp overloaded of a mark equivalent to a Oblitération.

Postal use

Sold in great number, these stamps are accepted by the transmitting postal administration only if they free a sending in great number and only one day. For this reason some of the first préoblitérés stamps carried the current date of use. The administration saves the time intended for obliteration; sometimes, it grants a preferential price to the purchasers of these stamps.

Gradually, these stamps are replaced by marks preprinted on packing of the folds.

Philatelic use

These stamps are often collected new bought with the unit with the philatelic service. To collect them on fold, it is necessary to have parts making it possible to show that it is indeed a specimen of a mass mailing; not very obvious proof which can explain why the collection of préoblitérés is not very current as seems to indicate a philatelic article of 1999: “Petition for the rehabilitation of préoblitérés”.

Alternatives by country

Belgium

Belgium emitted stamps préoblitérés starting from 1906. The seals of the Belgian préoblitérés stamps had three indications initially:

  • a name of city in French,
  • his translation in Flemish,
  • and a year.

Then, as from 1931, only the mention of the year was preserved.

Lastly, currently, since 1967, obliterations do not have any more an indication of date and are reduced to a horn in a rectangle with the angles rounded.

Canada

The Canada emitted stamps préoblitérés starting from 1889.

The first emissions were reduced to obliterations made up of horizontal bars without geographical ascriptions.

Then starting from 1893, one saw appearing mentions of cities, accompanied by code of province.

From 1928, a simple number of office replaced the geographical mentions.

The United States

As for Belgium, the United States emitted stamps in a local context. One generally finds on obliteration the name of the city and the code of the State.

Taking into account the multiple alternatives of the seals on various values, the collection of préoblitérés American is voluminueuse and exceeds the five hundred and thousand objects to be collected.

The United States also emitted revenue stamps préoblitérés.

France

In France, as of the years 1860 and 1870, like in 1893, the postal administration undertook experiments of use of used stamps in advance.

As from 1920, these stamps intended for the “mass mailings” reappear and are generalized. After a Overload of the type “STATIONS PARIS FRANCE 1920”, the stamps of everyday usage used carry from now on an arc of circle marked “AFFRANCHts - STATIONS”.

In 1954, a stamp with the type Coq is the first type being used only for préoblitérés, followed from 1964 of series illustrated sets of themes: Gallic Currency, astrological signs, mushrooms, monuments, natural elements, musical instruments and orchises. Since 1965, these stamps are sold with the unit with the collectors.
