Stamp (science fiction)

Matrice indicates, in the literature Cyberpunk and Postcyberpunk, an extremely advanced form of the network Internet. It is generally about a numerical universe allowing a total sensory immersion.

The term was popularized, if not invented, by William Gibson, the author of Neuromancien . At the time of the writing of its book (published in 1984), he did not know large thing with data processing.

Until 1999, this term was attached, for those which knew it with this numerical hallucination (the others attach it to the biological matrix); The roleplays of near future always have a type of “pirate” ( netrunner in Cyberpunk 2020 , decker in Shadowrun , jackor in CyberAge …) who spends most clearly his time in the matrix. Followers of Virtual of the roleplay Magus: the Rise are also very often in the Matrix.

Stamp and Matrix

Since 1999, the term is attached to the film Matrix , from which the action occurs mainly in a numerical matrix. However, it is a type of matrix among others, rather different from the traditional meaning.

Thus, when somebody speaks today about “matrix”, it is difficult to know if it wants to speak about the “traditional matrix” or of the “matrix of Matrix”.
