Stalingrad is a German film carried out by Joseph Vilsmaier left in 1992.
Synopsis
With the end of the year 1942, the armies of Hitler advance very far in Soviet territory. Their main aim is Stalingrad. Vis-a-vis a keen Russian resistance and one terrible winter old victim to which it was not prepared, Life Armed sudden with heavy losses. While Hitler clamp victory with the radio, its men understand that the city will become for them a hell of steel and blood. The film reports the Bataille of Stalingrad, seen German side, while following the course to the face of Lieutenant Hans von Witzland and of its men. The history begins with their rise with the face, then follows them in the hell of the engagements, where having lost half of the men of the group and after being placed under the ordering of a sadistic captain, the lieutenant carries out his men through the cold steppes. After their surrounding by the forces Soviet, the group will go from the attempts at rebelled in attempts at desertion then, finally, towards death.
Comment
Extremely of important means (about thirty actors, 25.000 observers, 100 stuntmen, 22 weight-heavy, 45 trucks, 20 vans, 29 slow trains, 50 cars, 10 sledges with engine, 25 Czech armoured tanks, 18 Finnish armoured tanks, 6 planes, a train, 8 tons of explosives, 200.000 artillery ammunition, 10.000 costumes), the film is first of all an impressive historical reconstitution. Then, it makes it possible to follow the life of simple men, German soldiers at the time of this battle. The engagements, although present, represent a less share of film. What is proposed here, they are the men, lost in the madness of the war with their fears, their ignorances, their doubts and the revolt which thunders in them. The aspect " guerre" , passes sometimes in the second plan and leaves the place to dialogs between soldiers relating to the nostalgia of the country, their vision of the war, their daily worries and their manner of facing the horror of the war. This film is a very beautiful table of men given up far from on their premises by leaders disconnected from the field reality. The account and the dialogs never fall into the Manicheism or the compassion and offer a glance new and moderate on this terrible battle, turning of the Second world war.
