Stalemates surprised (composition of studies of failures)

Here three studies of unusual Stalemate because the white king is in a central position. The stalemate is often used in the studies of failures but the esthetic element is not strictly speaking the stalemate itself, which after done everything rules of the game of failures and does not have anything exceptional, but rather the context in which it emerges. One can notice that even when it is known that a study ends in a stalemate, it is not always easy to solve it.

In this first study, of L.I. Kubbel, the white with the barks with a very unfavourable material discover a combination of Pat.

Solution: 1.Ta4! (threat 2.Ta8 which recovers the lady) Re7 2.Ta7+! Rd6 3.Ta8! Dxa8 stalemate. This stalemate right in the middle of the chess-board is not very easy to see coming.

In this second study, of A.A. Troitzky, the white cannot prevent the promotion of the black pawn, which leads to a fatal material imbalance. However, they can force a stalemate which is not so easy to implement.

Solution: 1.Td3+! Rxd3 (if not 2.Td1 control the box of promotion of the pawn) 2.Rf3! (threat to capture the pawn) g1: D stalemate. To be complete, one can note that if the blacks choose to promote their pawn out of turn with 2… g1: T it is also stalemate. If they choose promotion in rider with 2… g1: C then 3.Rg2 regains a part and obtains the null one. Lastly, if they choose to make second insane with 2… g1: F, the position is null because the two insane ones are of the same color of box and there is no possible chechmate with this material.

This third study, of E. LED Rio, is particularly interesting. The position is natural, it could easily occur in a real part. The material is also balanced the white do not seem not driven back to seek the takeover by force. The final is difficult all the same for the white which show two pawns of delay, but they are left there without effort.

Solution: 1.Rf4 Ré6 (the loss of a pawn would make the final null) 2.Té3+ Rf6 3.Ta3! Txa3 stalemate.
