Stalag
In the Nazi Germany, Stalag was a term indicating a type of camp for prisoner of war. Stalag is the abbreviation of " Mannschaftsstamm- und Straflager". This type of camp was not intended to the officers.
According to the Geneva Conventions of 1929, these camps are reserved only to the prisoners of war, not with the Civils.
The Stalag Luft III, managed as its name indicates it by the Luftwaffe, was the place of a spectacular escape bid. The March 24th 1944, 76 prisoners allied escaped by a tunnel of 110 Mr. This episode was immortalisé by the film the Great Escape .
One of the largest camps German of prisoners of war was, between 1939 and 1945, the Stalag VIII B . More: 300000 soldiers were imprisoned there with inhuman living conditions. Close to: 100000 of them died of disease, of hunger, exhaustion or ill treatments. They were buried in common graves.
