Stagire (in Greek old initially Στάγειρος/ Stágeiros then τὰ Στάγειρα/ tà Stágeira ), is an old city of Macedonia located in Chalcidique, on the gulf of the Strymon. It is mainly known to be the birthplace of Aristote, called for this reason the “Stagirite”.
Stagire is founded in 656 av. J. - C. by colonists of Andros, one of the islands of the Cyclades. In 480, it is occupied by the Large King achéménide Xerxès I {{er}}. It joined the Ligue of Délos but, with the city close to Acanthos, made defection in 424, convinced by the promises of the Spartiate Brasidas. Athens sends then the demagog Cléon like Stratège to take the city, but this one fails.
Philippe II of Macedonia succeeds in taking the city. In homage to Aristote, tutor of its son Alexandre, it restores it later a few years.
