Staff of Clercq

Staff De Clercq , of its true name Jeroom Gustaaf De Clercq (Everbeek, September 16th, 1884 - Ghent, October 22nd, 1942), was a leader nationalist Flemish. He is especially known for his collaboration with Adolf Hitler and his encouragements repeated with the collaboration of the Flemish with the German occupant during the Second world war.

In 1933, it founds the Flemish National league ( Vlaams Nationaal Verbond - VNV). The candidates of its party obtain: 13.6% of the Flemish votes in 1936, then: 14.7% in 1939.

Anti-semite convinced, De Clerq accommodated the Occupation Nazi with open arms, thinking that it would give the opportunity to him to create a Flemish State, which would join together the French Flanders, the Belgian Flanders and the Netherlands.

He dies in Ghent, on October 22nd 1942. Its successor with the head of the VNV was Hendrik Elias. Regarded still today as the founder of the Flemish nationalist parties, the Vlaamse Militanten Orde obtained the transfer of its body to the cemetery of Asse in 1978.
