Staccato passage
The staccato passage or “ piqué ” - i.e., the phrased in detached notes - indicates a type of phrased in which the notes of the reasons and the musical sentences must be carried out with suspensions between them. It is an instrumental technique being opposed to the Legato.
Musical theory
These detached notes are indicated by means of a point placed above or below the head of the note - generally, contrary to the pole of the figure of note.

Sometimes the suspension between the notes is longer, the notes are then called pricked notes . Other times, the suspension are shorter, the notes are then called notes carried - sometimes called, lourées notes .

Let us notice that other signs are sometimes employed to indicate specific forms of staccato passage. Some of them can refer at the same time to nuances and equivalent thus with simple accents. In addition, the significance of all these signs varies in particular according to the instrument concerned.
Technique of play
One accentuates the change of note while pricking, by curtailing the note ; according to the instrument, one slackens the key with the Piano, one puts back the fingers of the right hand on the cords with the Guitare, one breathes in Chant, one solidifies the bow on the cord for the String instruments, one retains percussions, etc
