Stabat MATER is a Christian Hymne composed at the thirteenth century and allotted to the Italian Franciscain Jacopone da Todi. It evokes the Souffrance Marie at the time of the Crucifixion of Jesus-Christ. The name of the prayer is an abbreviation of Stabat MATER dolorosa , its first towards in Latin, whom one can translate as follows: “The Mother of the pains was held upright”. This medieval Latin poem is often regarded as the traditional expression of a new form of piety, empathique and emotive, characteristic of the end of the Middle Ages. The topic of the MATER Dolorosa also fits in the explosion of the devotion mariale, promoted in particular by the order franciscain.

Stabat MATER was put in of music by several type-setters, among them Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, Domenico Scarlatti, Jean-Baptiste Pergolèse, Joseph Haydn, Gioacchino Rossini, Franz Schubert, Antonín Dvořák, Francis Poulenc, Krzysztof Penderecki, Karol Szymanowski and Arvo Pärt. Stabat MATER was one of the last compositions of Giuseppe Verdi, her Quattro Pezzi Sacri (" Four Sacrées" Parts;), 1898.
