Staatskapelle of Dresden

The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , more commonly called Staatskapelle of Dresden in French is a German Orchestre based in the town of Dresden. Founded by the prince-voter of Saxony Maurice the November 22nd 1548, it is one of oldest the Orchestre S of the world, if it is not oldest any more.

History

Staatskapelle of Dresden, like its Berliner homonym, fulfills a double function: that of orchestra of opera in the capacity as orchestra appointed of the Semperoper of Dresden, and that of symphony orchestra. The majority in its concerts take place in Semperoper, some with the Église Notre-Dame of Dresden. The recordings of the orchestra generally take place with the Church Saint-Luc (Lukaskirche) of the city.

With its creation, the Hofkapelle ( vault of court ) fulfills primarily a religious function. It is then a vocal formation more than instrumental. Thereafter, its composition and its missions evolve/move, with the development of the opera at the 18th century.

The orchestra had during its history of eminent chiefs. The name of Heinrich Schütz is associated with its first years, and those of Carl Maria von Weber and of Richard Wagner at the 19th century. With these two personalities, Dresden and its Staatskapelle play a central role in the creation of the German national opera, at one time when the kind is dominated in Germany by the Italian music. At the 20th century, it is partly this tradition which is prolonged by collaboration between the orchestra and Richard Strauss, as well as a leader as Compositeur. Good number of its works, especially scenic, were created by Staatskapelle of Dresden, and make since part of the tradition of the orchestra. Karl Böhm, Rudolf Kempe and - less frequently - Herbert von Karajan, three chiefs particularly prestigious and familiar of the work of Strauss, also directed it during the 20th century.

Herbert Blomstedt was the Musical director of 1975 with 1985. It is with him that the orchestra recorded the integral of the nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Giuseppe Sinopoli was the chief until his brutal death, in 2001. From August 2002 at the year 2004, it is Bernard Haitink which succeeded to him. Since, Fabio Luisi was indicated Generalmusikdirektor . It will take officially its functions in 2007. Meanwhile, Sir Colin Davis received the title of Ehrendirigent (honorary chief).
