History

St Augustine is the oldest city of the United States, based by Spanish in 1565 after being conquered on French by the Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. As it was the day of the Augustin saint, the place took the name of the bishop of Hippone (in Latin Hippo Regius, is the ancient name of the town of Bône or Annaba, being in the North-East of the Algérie). In fact, the French had already founded a station on the spot the previous year. Spanish, not wanting a presence French in Florida so close to their colonies, dislodged about it and decided to occupy the places permanently.

Indeed, after several attempts missed by Spanish colonizations, French unloaded in Florida. The April 30th 1562, Jean Ribault, elected by the admiral Coligny, recognized the coast of Florida and went up towards north to the St.Johns river, close to Jacksonville. One raised there a column with the armorial bearings of the Catherine queen. More in north, Ribault is established on the Parris island by building a dwelling which it named Charlesfort. Pedro Menèndez de Avilès expelled the French of the grounds of King d' Espagne. At the time of one second attempt to colonize Florida, Laudonnière took the direction of a forwarding made up of 300 people. They built the Fort Caroline there on bank of the St.Johns river, which, rightly, can be regarded as the beginnings of St-Augustine. The catch of the place by Spanish finished the war between France and Spain for the control of Florida.

The city was attacked and set fire to by Francis Drake in 1586. It undergoes the attacks of the English in 1702 and the British in 1740 from South Carolina. In 1763, the treaty of Paris puts an end to the Seven Year old war and makes pass Florida in the hands of the Great Britain. The treaty of Paris of 1783 puts an end to the war of independence and gives again Florida with the Spaniards, until 1821 (treaty of Adams-Onís).

Flagler makes build a hotel in 1884, the Pounce of Leon decorated by Tiffany. It was transformed thereafter into college. Nowadays, St Augustine is one of the most appreciated destinations of Florida.
