Störmer horst

Horst Ludwig Störmer , born the April 6th 1949 with Francfort-sur-le-Main, is a German Physicien , prize winner of the Nobel Prize of physics in 1998.

Biography

Horst Störmer grows with his/her Heinz brother in Dreieich. He wants to begin studies of Architecture at the polytechnic university of Darmstadt after his vat, but, the times of inscription not having been respected, he is registered in Civil engineering. He notes that he is not gifted for this matter and changes university.

At the university " Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe" , in Frankfurt, it also misses the date of inscription for the studies of Physique, and starts to study the Mathématiques. It is reorientated the following year in physics. After the diploma in 1974 of the pulpit " Werner Martienssen" , with professor Eckardt Hoenig, at the time where Gerd Binnig works in the team, it passes by the laboratory of professor Hans-Joachim Queisser, with Grenoble. He then works with the Laboratoires Beautiful with Murray Hill, New Jersey, as post-doctoral researcher. He obtains in 1978 an established post. In 1983, it is named responsible for the laboratory for the optical and electronic characteristics of the solid bodies, then becomes director of the physics laboratory (1992).

He is married with Dominique Parchet, met in Grenoble, and which works with the the United Nations.

The career

Horst Störmer works on two-dimensional gases. It contributes to the development of the idea of " equipment of modulation" as of the first week. It receives, a few months later, an established post in the Bell laboratories. By analyzing one of the chips having the " equipment of modulation" in the laboratory of the intense magnetic fields of the Massachusetts Institute off Technology in Cambridge in collaboration with Daniel Tsui, in the search of indices of the existence of a hypothetical crystal of electrons, they discover the fractional quantum Hall effect.

In 1998, it obtains the Nobel Prize of physics for the “Description of the fractional quantum Hall effect”, with Robert B. Laughlin and Daniel Tsui.
