Stéréotaxie

The stéréotaxie is a technique used in Neurochirurgie to reach zones of the brain in a precise way. It makes it possible to define the position of a structure thanks to a frame of reference in space and to reach it to carry out a treatment, a Biopsie, etc the method ensures a better precision while being less invasive than a traditional intervention.

Principles

A space of reference as a preliminary is defined. One fixes for that a system of application on the cranium of the patient. One uses then means of medical imagery (IRM, Tomodensitométrie, Radiographie, etc) to extract from the reference marks in space starting from the framework. These points make it possible to deduce a frame of reference relating to the framework and to obtain the position of the target in this new reference frame.

Information obtained is deferred on the mechanical device fixed firmly on the head of the patient. The surgeon uses guides assembled on the system to reach the target zone. The precision varies according to the system and the depth of the zone to be reached.

Use

The stereotaxic surgery is indicated for:
  • the biopsies (Tumor S, Gliome S, etc), the interventions of this type are current under stéréotaxie
  • the treatment of the Parkinson's disease by the introduction of electrodes to very precise places of the brain
  • the treatment of the Tremblement S and abnormal movements
  • the treatment of the epilepsy
  • the combat against the Douleur by destroying certain implied zones
