Srinagar

Srinagar or Shrînâgar - of nâgar , city and shrî , holy - is the capital of the States Indian of the Jammu-Kashmir. The city is located at 1768 m of altitude, on the lake Dal, formed by the Jhelum and celebrates for its houseboats , of the boats of dwelling to often luxurious installation. It would have been founded by Ashoka under the name of Meruvardhana-svâmin .

Benefitting from a moderated climate, it, at all times, was a stay appreciated far from the touffor southernmost of India, and its canal system did sometimes called it the Venice of India . A long time tourist destination appreciated, the events of the Cashmere carried a fatal blow to its frequentation. October 1st, 2001, a suicide bombing strikes the Parliament of the Jammu-and-Cashmere with Srinagar, making 38 dead.

Remarkable monuments

The Cashmere enjoys a completely characteristic wood architecture:
  • the Jamâ Masjid of 1404, large mosque renovated by Aurangzeb
  • the Madani Masjid built by Zain ul-Abidîn
  • the Shâh Hamada Masjid of the 17th century to the multiple roofs
and several gardens moghols whose Jardin of Shâlimâr going back to celebrates it 1619.
  • the Roza Ball, rectangular temple relatively low (date of unknown erection) where one can see fall it from Yuz Asaf, i.e. Jesus for the Indians.
