Square Penguin

Carré Penguin is a group of Breton Musique.

Biography

The group Carré Penguin is founded in 1986 by the player of bombards Herve Lu, the accordionist Remi Martin, the Gilbert guitarist Pennec and the violonist Jean-Claude Riou. This birth takes place with the one hollow period old right in the middle for the Breton music… That will not prevent Carré Penguin from connecting an about sixty Festoù-noz at the time of the first year of its existence. Originality and the quality of the many compositions of Remi Martin (musician who inspired - and inspires still - hundreds of Breton accordionists), arrangements and the innovative “colors” of their music, are certainly not foreign with the immediate success of Square Penguin, and inspired besides very largely the many groups of fest-noz which followed, creating a new dynamics in the Breton music.

Starting from 1988, a change of course takes place: the group becomes professional and just two new musicians to replace Remi Martin and Jean-Claude Riou. It will be “the period of both Ronan”: Ronan Robert with the Diatonic accordion and Ronan Pinc with the Violin. They will belong to the team during six years, bringing to it their “leg” and their style private individuals which very largely made school since. It is in this formula that the group was really made known, in particular for its innovative music and its arrangements - but also for its spirit of festival, by animating festoù-noz enormously and by connecting many rounds through Europe (Spain, England, Germany, Holland)…

In 1994, both Ronan leave the group for other musical projects. For marking the change well, Carré Penguin decides to become a quintet. In February 1995, Carré Penguin is made of: Yannig Alory with the Flute, Yann-Loïc Jolly with the diatonic accordion and Flying Erwan with the low . It is with this formula that the group goes surfer on the Celtic wave of the years 1990 and to become one of the most popular groups of fest-noz that Brittany knew.

During ten years, in addition to 120 on 130 annual dates, great moments punctuated the life of the group: the Francofolies of the La Rochelle, the Bataclan and Circus of winter of Paris, the Transmusicales of Rennes, the festival of Cleguerec, the Festival interceltic of Lorient

But what especially marked this period, it is the creation of the collective Liyannaj, meeting of the group Carré Penguin with the musicians inhabitants of Guadeloupe of Akiyo Ka (percussionnists and singers). Liyannaj was made hear with the Grande market of the Villette in 1998, with Nantes, the festival of Cleguerec, in Lorient, in Guadeloupe and Martinique like with the great festival of Rudolstadt in Germany. One of the titles of the Liyannaj disc will be used as credits for emission of Philippe Meyer on France Inter.

In 2005, the percussionnist Stephan Sotin (ex-musician of Gilles Servat, of Skeduz and member of Stock year In) replaces Erwan Volant. The group leaves on new bases. This year 2005 is already strong in experiments since Carré Penguin went to the Kampuchea to tighten a bridge between the Breton music and the music khmere of the group Urba (the Orchestra of the Royal Academy of Beautiful arts of Phnom Penh). This meeting will remain one very strong moment in the life of the group.

The July 13rd 2006 the group with celebrated its 20 years with Ripe-of-Brittany on banks of the Lake Guerlédan. On this occasion, all the musicians who played would not be this that in exceptional circumstances were present. That is to say more than one score of formations.
