Definition
In luminous indication, the square is presented in the form of two red lights, aligned vertically or, is horizontally accompanied by a Nf plate. In mechanical indication, it is presented in the form of a rosette (table) to red and white checkerwork.
The square closed order the stop and should not in no case to be crossed by a train of him even. It is a signal of protection used to protect from the trackside equipment or parts of way (needles, crossings, laybys).
It is preceded at a sufficient distance by braking by a warning.
The purpose of the Nf plate is to differentiate a square having a burnt-out lamp from a semaphore.
Crossing of the signal
The driver of a train stopped in front of a square signal can cross it after having received a written authorization: it is about the Bulletin C (or Cba in mailbox) which is delivered by the station which orders the opening of the signal. The driver must then apply the rule of the Marche at sight in all the canton which follows this signal.
Emergency
It can happen that a circulation without meets such a closed signal presenting the square to be preceded by a warning. It acts in the major part of the cases of an emergency closing of the signal on behalf of the station the commander. At this time the driver must stop its train urgently. If it crosses the square signal in an inopportune way it must then observe if it engages or not the point protected by the signal, a Aiguille for example.
If it is the case it must start emergency operations (emission of a radio alarm, emission of a luminous alarm, and as soon as possible connect themselves with the station ordering the signal to order the protection of its train per closing of the signals which can carry out another circulation on its train.
If the insurance of protection cannot be confirmed by the station, the driver must be equipped with the tackles of protection and go to feet in front of the first train likely to move towards him.
