Square (ballet)

A squares indicates the fifth level in the hierarchy of the Ballet of the Opera of Paris: the pupils of the School of Dance reach under squares after one year of training course (square training).

The following levels are:

  • Coryphée” which, according to its etymology, leads the units
  • “prone” (one formerly distinguished the “small subjects” and the “great subjects”) which are already soloists
  • First dancer
  • star”, first level of this hierarchy.

All these ranks are subjected to an internal annual competition.

The supreme title of “principal dancer” is not obtained on contest but by nomination of the Administrator on a proposal from the Director of the dance.

Square in general constitute the whole of the “corps de ballet”.
