Squad Designated Marksman Files
SDM-R ( Squad Designated Marksman Files ) is a Fusil of precision derived from the M16 intended to increase the firepower of the groups of Infanterie of the US Army.
Presentation
Following the example the EC what had done to the US Marine Body by creating its Squad Advanced Marksman (gunners of precision integrated in its squads of infantry) and by equipping them with a specific Fusil of precision, the Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle (SAM-R), the US Army launched a programme of drive having for finality to provide a gunner of precision, the Squad Designated Marksman (SDM), with each squad , and to develop a rifle for these SDM, the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R).The SDM is not intended to operate at long distances, but is involved to directly support its unit by precise shootings at distances slightly higher than those of the infantrymen.
Like the SAM-R , the SDM-R is a version of the rifle of attack M16 modified to improve its precision, and built by an organization of the US Army, the US Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU); the SDM-R is called besides “ the AMU files ”.
The SDM-R must make it possible the squad to engage of the targets up to 600 meters of distance, which is close to what was required for similar weapons like SAM-R, the Mk.12 Special Purpose Rifle and the SEAL Recon Rifle .
Characteristics
- Upper receiver : the upper receiver are of type flat-signal (rail MIL-STD-1913 “Picatinny” on the top). Contrary to the SAM-R and the Special Purpose Files, they are not equipped with lengthened input hoppers. The relaxation is replaced by a standard relaxation match on two floors of Knight' S Armament Company allowing only the semi-automatic shooting.
- Lower receiver : it seems that the SDM-R were built by using lower receivers already in stock; the lower receivers are thus of type “A2” (initially intended for the M16A2/M16A4 and M4/M4A1) and had been manufactured by two suppliers, Colt and FN Herstal.
- Hand-shield: the SDM-R is equipped with a floating hand-shield Daniel Defense M4Rail 12.0 with rails MIL-STD-1913 “Picatinny”.
- Stick: the SDM-R uses a stick of traditional M16A2.
- Canon: a Douglas gun floating of 20 inches to the step of 1:8 " out of stainless steel, with 12 grooves to reduce it replaces the gun of M16A2 or A4 of 20 inches striped to the step of 1:7 " , it keeps the cahce-flames A2 type.
- Optical: the optics provided to the SDM-R is glasses Trijicon ACOG ( Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight ) 4 X 32 mm which can be various versions: ADJ001, TA01NSN (NSN 1240-01-412-6608), TA31F or TA01B.
- metal Bodies of aiming: the SDM-R is equipped with a rise of Matech Industries 600-meter and with a handlebar fixed at the gun by four screws on the M16.
- Bipod: a bipod Harris SSL fixed at an assembly A.R.M.S. #17DR Throw Lever Dovetail Rail Mount is fixed under hand-shield.
Versions
The 82e airborne division uses a shortened version of the SDM-R based on the rifle M4/M4A1 and sometimes called M4 SDM. The gun is Douglas of 18 inches flute to the step of 1:8 " , an uptake is fixed at semi-length of the gun, and the hand-shield is a short version adapted to the rifle M4, Daniel Defense M4Rail 9.0. fluted barrel
Comparable weapons
The the USSR deployed a comparable weapon of employment in 1963. The SVD which, using a ammunition more powerful than that of the rifle of standard attack (the célbère AK-47), has a longer range (up to 800 meters). The American armed forces currently use several rifles of precision based on the M16 intended to serve within the units for the support until approximately 600 meters of distance like SAM-R of the US Marine Body, the Mk.12 Special Purpose Rifle special forces, and the “ SEAL Recon Rifle ” SEAL. The SDM-R is probably less expensive and less powerful than those because its glasses ACOG are less advanced than Leupold MR/T which equip SAM-R, Mk.12 SPR and “SEAL recon riffle”. The SDM-R is more comparable with the “West Coast SAM-R”.
