History of the frankness

Beginnings in ABA

The frankness is created in 1967 under the name of Dallas Chaparrals , at the same time as ABA, concurrent league of NBA. But the interest of the city for its new club of tennis shoe is weak. During the season 1970-71, the club is even famous in Texas Chapparals , to give a regional dimension, while also evolving/moving in the texanes cities of Fort Worth and Lubbock. This change is a failure and Chapparals turns over to Dallas for the season 1971-72.

The scores are average: after having failed the doors of the finales at the time of the inaugural season, Chapparals are eliminated four seasons from following the first turn of the playoffs, and miss the playoffs for the first time of their history in 1972-73 (the league counting only ten clubs, only the worst team of each division is not qualified).
The frankness is then resold to be relocated with San Antonio, and re-elected in San Antonio Spurs (the Eperons of San Antonio ). The red, white and blue of Chapparals are abandoned with the profit of the black and money which are today still the colors of the club. Spurs, while being the only frankness from a major league of the city, finally will succeed in attracting the public. Carried out by the future Hall off Famer George Gervin acquired in 1974, and assisted by James Silas, Spurs are perceived like a solid equips with the ABA. In 1976, when the ABA goes bankrupt, Spurs are recovered by NBA with three other teams (the Nuggets, the Pacers, and the Nets).

First seasons in NBA

The years 1980

The years 1990 and the first title

In spite of the good performances, Spurs do not exceed the second turn of the playoffs. The trainer Larry Brown is then replaced during the season 1991-92 by Bob Bass which makes the interim until the end of the season. For the season 1992-93, it is Jerry Tarkanian, the former trainer of the university of Nevada Las Vegas which is named. But the experiment is very quickly a failure, and after 20 matches for an assessment of 9 victories and 11 defeats, it is replaced by John Lucas, trainer initial who constituted a solid reputation within the league by helping several players to follow their rehabilitation after judgment for use of drug. Rodman, although being the best rebondor of the NBA since 1992, is too difficult to manage for its trainer: he “is finally given” to the Chicago bulldozers in exchange of Will Perdue.

Season 1995-96 is balanced once again by an excellent regular season (59 victories) and a disappointment in play-offs (demolished with the second tower vis-a-vis Utah Jazz). And against any waiting, Spurs will be inserted during the season 1996-97: a cascade of wounds, to start with David Robinson, inalienable until the end of the season after only six matches, runs the club which gains only 20 matches, that is to say the worst assessment of the history of the club, only two years after having established its record of victories. Brian Hill is dismissed at the end of 18 matches to be replaced by Gregg Popovich, old assisting of Spurs of the time of Larry Brown. With the third worse assessment of the league, Spurs gain with the lottery the first choice of the draft. They select another exceptionally gifted pivot: Tim Duncan .

Duncan is affirmed as of its first season like one of the best players of the league: it is named rookie year and is elected in the All-NBA First TEAM . The agreement with Robinson is perfect, but Spurs are again beaten by the Jazz in semi-finals of Conference.

With the addition of veterans such Mario Elie and Jerome Kersey, Spurs gain 37 victories for 13 defeats in the shortened season 1998-99 with 50 matches because of the strike of the players, the " lock out".
