History

The club is created at the end of 1899 under the name of Athletic Club of Villeurbanne . It becomes the Amicale of Charpennes in 1907, then the sporting Amicale villeurbannaise in 1931 and the Sports association villeurbannaise in 1933. Lastly, in December 1948, the club links its forces with those of the Lyons Éveil to found ASVEL , club general sports.

The section Rugby reaches more the high level amateur, the Fédérale 1, at the conclusion of the season 2007-08. It is famous for the quality of its formation.

The female section gained the first championship of France of the category in 1972.
