US Lorraine Border with the ACE

The origins of the current club pro of Nancy go back to the foundation, in 1910, of the US Border by Maurice of Vienna. The USF is seen equipped with a new municipal stage in 1922: the Seedbed. The club of the president of the League of Lorraine de Football (Maurice of Vienna is the president of 1921 with 1956) evolved/moved up to that point at the Drouot stage. The USF changes name into 1928 to adopt that of Lorraine Sports association. Finalist of the Cut of Lorraine 1929, the ASL falls in 32es from finale from the Coupe de France 1935 vis-a-vis the pros from the RC Strasbourg (2-0). It is the last blow of glare of the ASL. During the adoption of the statute pro by the local rivals of the SUL, which is transformed into FC Nancy, the ASL the championship of promotion of Lorraine to the 5th rank finishes; the SUL, 8th and last, were relegated in the First Division of District. Consequently, the ASL has the worst problems to preserve its players and plunges quickly in the classification.

The accession with the professional statute

After the abandonment of the pros of FC Nancy (club not having structurally anything to see with the ASNL, even if several figures of the FCN join the new club) in spring 1964, Claude Cuny, tired not to see Nancy more appearing among the elite of French football, launches out to the autumn 1966 in a creation project of a new professional club with the assistance of some friends (the press will call them soon the “Promoters”). A first stage, the operation “P.0. box 17”, remained famous with Nancy, is intended to make sure that this initiative corresponds well to a popular aspiration. Largely relayed by the press, in particular by Is republican under the feather of Michel Laurent, BP 17 is a success: 18.000 letters, charts and petitions are collected. In parallel, Claude Cuny makes profitable the match of Besancon-Lille Coupe de France disputed in Nancy in January 1967 to popularize his initiative near the spectators and to bring the demonstration to the Grouping (ancestor of the League) that football remains mobilizing near the Nancy public.

The moral support of Nancy and even of most of Lorraine being acquired, another stage is launched, intended to collect funds. For this purpose, friendly matches of good level are organized in Nancy and of voluntary key-rings celebrating sell the fiftieth birthday of the Coupe de France. In same time, an adhesion campaign is launched, gaining a success less than that discounted by the promoters within sight of the success of the operation “BP 17”. Finally, 50.000 FRF can nevertheless be collected, mainly thanks to the financial support of the company Total. The mayor had committed himself giving a franc to each time Claude Cuny would find two of them; the town hall thus adds 25.000 FRF in the cases of the future ASNL. It is little, but it will be sufficient.

Clude Cuny is pressed on the ACE Lorraine (ASL) to conclude its project because the existence of a structure amateur is essential condition with the accession with professionalism. One cannot speak about " création" of club in 1967, but just of passage to the professional statute (as it was the case in all the other French clubs). After some vexations, the Grouping of professional football accepts finally, the June 16th 1967, the candidature of the ASNL which is seen registered with the calendar of the Second division as of the season 1967-1968. There remain only a few weeks with the club to engage… players and a trainer.

Rene Pleimelding, former player of the FC Nancy and old international, is selected to take the orders of the team. As for the manpower, composed in the urgency, it is a mixture of professionals of experiment (the former player of FC Nancy Antoine Redin, called to become the owner of defense, but also Charles Gasparini, Jean-Paul Kraft, Roland Masucci…), of professionals in lack of recognition (the striker Mathieu Schneider) and regional good players (Michel Lanini, Gerard Braun, Roger Formica…). They will be joined in the course of season by two foreigners: Dragan Miletic and international Luxemburgish Edy Dublin. A team was born.

Beginnings as a professional

After only three seasons in D2, the ACE Nancy-Lorraine reaches the First division in 1970 while seizing the second place of the championship of D2 and by overcoming the frightening test of the stoppings.

During the beginning of the year 1970, except for a return to the lower level during the season 1974-1975 which offers its first championship of D2 to him, the ASNL finishes its seasons in the soft belly of the classification of D1. As from 1975, under the impulse of its trainer Antoine Redin and of a group of young talented players resulting from his “Academy”, the ASNL writes one of the most beautiful pages of its history. The team finishes 4th championship of D1 at the time of the season 1976-1977 and gains the Coupe de France the following season vis-a-vis Nice (1-0, goal of Platini). The principal players of the team are then Jean-Claude Cloët, Carlos Curbelo, Jean-Michel Moutier, Jean-Pierre Raczinski, Francisco Rubio, Olivier Rouyer and Michel Platini, without forgetting the unhappy Sylvain Jannaud which will see its promising career abruptly stopped by a road accident. The group that they form, carefree man and talented, are called the “college butterfly”.

The Platini time

Author of the victorious goal vis-a-vis Nice finally of the Coupe de France to the Park of the Princes in 1978, Michel Platini, wire of Italian immigrants (Aldo and Anna Platini) native of Joeuf, joined the ACE Nancy-Lorraine after being refused by the FC Metz. It is in Nancy that for the first time the famous mannequins used appeared to draw the frank blows, the wonder Michel Platini thus became an expert on the matter. He will very quickly integrate the team of France, illustrating himself in particular at the time of the World cup 1982, where France is eliminated into 1/2 finale by FRG. Michel Platini will leave Nancy for the ACE Saint-Etienne then the Juventus of Turin, it is regarded as one of the best French players of all times.

The following year, in 1978-79, for its first participation out of Cut of Europe, the ACE Nancy-Lorraine is eliminated from the Cut of the winners of Cut in eighth of finale by the Servette of Geneva after having left the Danes Frem Copenhagen. Michel Platini, wounded a good part of the season, cannot take part in this first European countryside of the ASNL. The beginning of the year 1980 sees the ACE Nancy Lorraine settling in first part of table of the championship of France of D1.

One difficult period

After its descent in the Second division at the conclusion of the season 1986-1987, the ACE Nancy-Lorraine will know one difficult long period. The only sun ray on the stage Marcel-Barb will be the Platini jubilee organized on May 23rd, 1988 for the end of the professional path of most famous of the Nancy footballers. This evening, on the lawn of the Stage Barb, the 3 large tenors of world football (the king Peeled, Diego Maradona and Michel Platini) are joined together for the first time. The ACE Nancy-Lorraine will not manage to be maintained durably in the First division until the beginning of the year 2000. The team finds League 1 at the conclusion of the season 2004-2005, where the team is crowned for the fourth time champion of France of League 2.

A new breath

The following year, thanks to the work of its trainer Pablo Correa and a group of young players resulting from the training center, one of best in France, the ASNL gains the Cut of the League for the first time of its history by beating Nice 2 goals with 1 in the mythical enclosure of the Stade de France. An important popular movement followed this epopee, Plus of 40.000 Nancy were present at the Stade de France. 11 special trains rejoined the station of the East while more than 300 buses and of the thousands of private cars converged towards Saint-Denis.

The Lorraine team knows a new European competition then. Pulling is not lenient for him and the ASNL meets the prestigious formation of Schalke 04 (L1 German), preceding semi-finalist of the competition. Beaten 0-1 in Germany, the Lorraine ones carry out a heroic return match for finally leaving the club whose budget is 5 times superior with that of the Lorraine formation. Andre Luiz, Curbelo and Dia will give a new wind to Marcel-Barb and will carry very far the colors from Lorraine in this competition. At the time of the hen phase, the Lorraine ones, thanks to 2 victories and no one, are the first French to take down a ticket for the 16emes of finale. Unfortunately beaten in England (0-1), they will yield the first place of the group to Blackburn. The ACE Nancy-Lorraine will carry out a splendid match vis-a-vis the Feyenoord Rotterdam which, only has him, is titrated more at the European level than the whole of the French football clubs. Nancy crushes Feyenoord by 3 - the 0 on November 30th, 2006, which will start the anger of Hooligans of the Dutch club, which will cause extensive damage in the stage and downtown.

The ASNL is eliminated by the Ukrainian formation from the Chakhtior Donetsk, fished out League of the champions. The ladykiller of the ACE Rome carries it 1 to 0 in Nancy after a good tie of Lorraine with the match outward journey.
