Sport in the European Union

In the European Union, a great diversity of sports are practiced, with many athletes of first rank on a world level.

The action of the European institutions

On the level of the European commission, the police chief with Education and the Culture are in charge of the sports. In addition, 2004 are officially the European year of education by the sport

The news European Constitution quotes the sports as one of the fields where will be able to be exerted European programmes of actions of support, coordination and supplementation, as that already usually exists in many other common fields.

“The Union will contribute to the promotion of the sports activities in Europe, because of social and educational function of the sport. the action of the Union will aim at developing European dimension in the sport, by promoting equity in the competitions and the co-operation between the sporting and by protecting physical integrity and morals from the sportsmen and sporting organizations, in particular of the young sportsmen. ”

It is thus awaited that a co-operation reinforced in the Union for the international preparation with the competitions will have an effect on its sporting statute in the world. Thanks to adapted European programs, the least powerful Member States could be helped. Installations of drive, trainers and specialists in the sport will be able also beings shared between the Member States.

European Union and Olympic Games of summer 2004

The Olympic Games, as well antiques as contemporaries, were launched on the territory of what is now the European Union. Symbolically, the Olympic Games of summer 2004 proceeded with Athens (followed by the paralympic Jeux).

Although in many fields the European Union is regarded more and more as a full actor, with the same row or the place of the Member States, each member currently contributes in an individual way to the Olympic Games in the legal framework of an Olympic National committee (CNO).

The Olympic Résultats 2004 of the athletes of the European Union show a number of medals much higher than that of any CNO. Mechanical effects played on the cumulated total of three metals. In the sports by team, the presence of several teams undoubtedly inflated this number. On the other hand, the number of gold medals could have been higher in the case of paneuropéennes teams selectively bringing together the best athletes of the Union.

The European commission gave a report on this performance and happiness the European sportsmen of their excellence. It emitted the wish that the European flag is used in parallel with the national flags with the next Olympic Games.
