Splitting of the object
The cleavage of the object is a psychoanalytical concept introduced by Melanie Klein.
Melanie Klein supposes like first object of love of the infant the center, partial Objet that the child compares symbolically at the same time to his mother and at the same time to his environment.
The center showing in turn good or bad according to whether it satisfies or frustrates the desire of the baby, it is cleaved in a good object and a bad object. Those will enter then in a way differentiated dynamics from projection/Introjection.
The splitting of the object is thus an antiquated psychic mechanism, taking its place in the very first human psychic life times, according to Melanie Klein. It would be the most primitive defense against the Angoisse, primarily during the paranoid-schizoid Position, but also with the Depressive position, aiming the total Objet then.
