Splitting of the ego

See also: Cleavage (homonymy)

The splitting of the ego (German Ichspaltung), is the separation of the psychical reality in two parts.

Model: the Psychosis

In the psychosis, there is Déni Réalité, which is replaced by the Délire. The psychotic would thus give up his perception of reality, irreconcilable with the instinctual requirements.
The desire thus brings more to be acknowledged what is and to replace it by more bearable representations.

However, in any psychosis the patient however keeps a contact with reality, which leads Sigmund Freud to think the psychosis like separation between two parts of the personality, one perceiving reality and the other denying it.

The characteristic of cleavage lies in the absence of communication between the two cleaved personalities. These two personalities are not influenced any more; there is thus no compromise.

Cleavage and sexual Fetishism

In fetishism, the splitting of the ego supposes the same model that in the psychosis, but it protects from the Angoisse of castration. Part of the personality accepts the existence of a difference of the sexes, the women not having a Pénis (but the important thing, the significant point remains well the Phallus and not the real body). The other part of the fetishistic personality denies this sexual difference and supposes at the woman the presence of the penis, from where appearance of a fetish allowing to support the truth of this female phallus.

Cleavage and Neurosis

If Freud does not speak about splitting of the ego in the neurosis, it recognizes there the Dénégation of part of reality. In addition, the Refoulement leads well, according to Freud, so that part of lived psychic, the infantile Sexualité present in the adult, is not deteriorated by the real experiments - in other words the Inconscient does not evolve/move.

The thought freudienne thus is often modified: in the psychosis cleavage would be characterized by the multitude of personalities not interacting, while in the neurosis there would be formation only some characters .

Splitting of the object

For Melanie Klein, although the splitting of the ego is relevant it can have splitting of the object also there. The instinctual Object, like the mother, is cut in several parts: there will be for example training of a mother maternante and a persecuting mother.
