Spirits
see also: Etymology of Spirits
A spirituous is sometimes defined like a Boisson containing a strong percentage of alcohol, and sometimes like a Eau-de-vie, i.e. a drink resulting from the Distillation of Fruit S, grains or Herbe S, to which flavors are sometimes added (thus including Liqueur S, bitter S, anisated drinks, etc).
The designation of “ spiritueux ” comes owing to the fact that these alcohols, according to a popular expression, go up to the head, the seat of the spirit. Spirits also comes from Latin spiritus meaning “Spirit of wine”.
