Spirit off Saint Louis

The Spirit off Saint Louis is the Avion used by the American aviator Charles Lindbergh to carry out the first overhead crossing of the Atlantic Ocean - as a recluse and without stopover - the 20 and May 21st 1927.

History of the Spirit off Saint Louis

Charles Lindbergh took his take-off of the Aérodrome Roosevelt of Long Island, close to New York, the morning of May 20th, 1927; he lands the following day evening with the Aéroport of Le Bourget in Seine-Saint-Denis (France) in front of nearly 200.000 spectators. He will have traversed nearly 5.808 kilometers in 33 hours and 30 minutes.

Also called “ Ryan NYP ” (acronym of “ NR ew Y ork - P aris”), the monoplane was designed on the basis of Ryan m2 by engineer Donald Hall of the Ryan Airlines . Although intended for the flight New York - Paris, and built with San Diego, it was named Saint-Louis in thanks with financial aid - essential to the realization of the project of Lindbergh - offered by the generous financial ones of this city.

With the aim of reduce the apparatus, and thus to carry a maximum of Fuel, Lindbergh embarked with him only “the bare essential” while doing without in particular from Parachute and radio. Its plane, overloaded to the extreme with the addition of side tanks intended to increase its autonomy of flight, did not leave in Lindbergh any visibility to the front one. It had to use a Périscope to see in front of him, in addition to its instruments: Anemometer, Gyroscope and magnetic compass terrestrial.

The June 16th 1927, Charles Lindbergh accepted the Prix Orteig, a reward of 25  000 USD offered to the first aviator combined to carry out the non-stop flight between New York and Paris.

The Spirit off Saint Louis is currently in exposure to the National Air and Space Museum with Washington, cd.. In April 1928, the plane accomplished its last flight, of Saint Louis at Washington DC, where it was presented to the Smithsonian Institution by Charles Lindbergh.
