Sphinx of the poplar
The sphinx of the poplar is a Lépidoptère pertaining to Sphingidae.
-
Distribution: palearctic areas and Siberia in France everywhere.
- Scale of the male: 32 to 38 Misters
- Period of flight: from May to September in two generations.
- Habitat: close to the poplars.
- Plant-hosts: Populus , Salix and Betula .
- characteristic: at rest, the lower wings remain open while the higher is closed, which gives him this scaly aspect of the bark of tree so much mimetic that it is located only posed on an often unexpected support (wall, clothing,…) photo 1 . With the take-off by discovering the base highly coloured of its lower wings this sphinx loses its discretion and finds a flight which differentiates it little from the other butterflies of this type. photo 2
