The sphinx of the euphorbium ( Hyles euphorbiae ) meets since the south and the center of Europe as far as Central Asia. It was introduced in Canada in Ontario on the euphorbium ground cypress in 1965. It is since bench in North America.
In Europe, it is mainly associated with the Euphorbe ground cypress. (Euphorbia cyparissias) , but it also meets on Euphorbia esula , Euphorbia gerardiana , Euphorbia paralias and other species of the sub-genus Esula .
According to the Canadian ministry of agriculture it can be used like agent of biolic fight (insect defoliator) to limit the proliferation of the euphorbium ground cypress in North America.
“In tests without choice, of the caterpillars also developed on Euphorbia epithymoides , Euphorbia lathyris (sub-genus Esula ) Euphorbia marginata ( Agaloma ), but not on the sub-genera Poinsettia and Chamaesyce nor on other plants, except for the salicaire Lythrum salicaria (Lythraceae). Hyles euphorbiae should attack North-American euphorbiums of the sub-genus Esula , but its abundance in the United States is limited by a virus entomopathogene.”
