Orbe is a common Suisse of the Canton of Vaud, located in the District of Sphere, of which it is the Chef-lieu.

History

Sphere was, at the time of the Romains, an important node of the axis of the Northern to the Southern, and western with the Is.

Sphere is one of the stages of the Via Francigena, way of driving pilgrimage to Rome. It is mentioned for this reason by Sigéric, in 990, with the mention LV Urba (number of stage on the basis of Rome).

At medieval times, Orbe was used as place of division of kingdoms. The city builds its Château, comprising 4 turns, a round and three square, and high ramparts. The Légende (approximate) known as that at the time of the catch of the castle by the Bernese, those, exhausted by 3 days of seat, required of Urbigènes to serve a meal to them. Urbigènes took again a remainder of leeks and potatos, cooked and crushed the whole, addition of the sausages which trailed and served the dish. Later, it became the Papet of Vaud.

Sphere is now a small town which grows quickly, up there on the hill, overhanging the industrial parks downwards, in the plain. While arriving at Orbe by Chavornay, one observes the relief of the city being detached in front of Suchet.

Industry

Towards 1900, Nestlé builds a factory with Orbe, which will employ a majority of Urbigènes and will build her balance rural-industrialist. In 2000, the factory Nestlé of Sphere employed more than 1000 people (Research center PTC included/understood) and produces all the capsules Nespresso world.
