Sphaigne
Of the Sphagnaceae belongs, with that of the Ambuchananiaceae, with the order of the Sphagnales. It includes/understands one genre : Sphagnum , which gathers approximately 160 S throughout the world.
These species of Bryophyte S are at the origin of the formation of the Tourbière S by accumulation of their organic matter. The sphaignes , organizations vegetable without roots nor true conducting fabrics, have a continuous growth by their apical end whereas they die by their base thus accumulating the organic matter little broken up in an acid and anaerobic moist environment.
The sphaignes are the foams which form green cushions, sometimes reddish, gorged with water. The stems are drawn up, high from 10 to 40 cm, and carry all around short branches. Small sheets in scales push on the stems and the branches. The sphaignes lengthen quickly (approximately 3 cm per annum). The died parts, at the base of the cushions, constitute the peat.
