Speech with the lantern
the Speech with the lantern is a booklet written by Camille Desmoulins in 1789.
free France and its other lampoons made known Camille Desmoulins with the political elite which recognized it like one as of theirs. But it wished more still: to write a booklet which would bring success near the people to him.
Origin of the title of this bochure
Camille Desmoulins gave its voice to the most sinister object which officiated in the streets of the capital before the creation of the Guillotine. With the angle of the street of Strike and street of Basket making, above a shop of grocer, was an iron branch, the lantern which it supported formerly having disappeared. It was at this place that the rioters brought to hang them a spy of the governor of the Bastille, Joseph Foullon of Gifted, the assistant of the ministry for the War which was shown to have wanted to starve the Parisian ones, and the François baker. Soon to make known with the counter-revolutionaries the fate that it was reserved to them one will shout, one will sing: “Aristocrats with the lantern!”
Contents of the booklet
In this booklet, Camille Desmoulins announced the enemies of the Révolution and bringing them so to speak, notices T one, with the foot of the impromptu bracket. In its Speech with the lantern , it involved the Parisian ones in popular violence and with the outburst. At the time of the Massacres of September 1792, it regretted of them while saying: “It is a great evil which the people familiarize with these plays”. In this booklet it will attack Jean Paul Marat reproaching this last the facility with which it sends the people to carry out those that it had disgraced. Camille Desmoulins in its booklet will attest psychosis counter-revolutionary. It will call there with the Terreur but way ambiguity. Did expeditious popular justice seems to have given him regrets, have a preference for legal justice? By studying his lampoons here and there one could find evidence going in this direction, without them being fully persuasive. The Speech with the lantern was not to in no case a lamentable denunciation. A true patriotic breath animated Camille Desmoulins, in this book it celebrated against its detractors the incipient democracy and its future achievements.
Some extracts of the Speech to the lantern
“Since treason is proven, why enquérir itself if few the traitors? I will say it with the moderation which sied with a lantern, but also with the frankness which is appropriate in a free country and fulfilling the role of vigilance that one must await from my ministry and the eye of the large Dispenser of justice of France; we hold Besenval, of Espremesnil, Maury, the duke of Guiche; such an amount of better if they are innocent! But I do not like that one had slackened Cazalès. Its person is crowned, says one. I do not hear this word there. Wants one to say of the sior Cazalès like the Roman law, i.e., flattering Ulpien said it of the Prince: it is above the laws. That is false: it crowned and the of inviolable one there only innocence; it only can face the Lantern”.
“Has which will make T it believe (the mayor of Paris, Jean-Sylvain Bailly) that the platform of Montmartre was not froudroyer intended solely for us froudroyer and that it can be used for another use? Parisian goods, there was thus against you an execrable conspiracy. The conspiracy of the powders, whose discovery is celebrated in London by a festival birthday, was thousand times less noted, and you have escaped with the murder only by your courage, because the scélérats, the traitors are always loose, that they are animated only by selfishness and the cheap interest and that from a low passion it cannot be born from large things; with the place that patriotism, i.e. the love of the brothers and the lapse of memory of oneself, gives birth to heroic actions”.
“It is time, known as Camille Desmoulins, making speak the Lantern, that I mingle with these praises with right complaints. How much scélérats has just escaped to me! Not that I like an expeditious justice; you know that I gave signs of dissatisfaction during the rise of Fuller and Berthier, I broke twice the fatal lace. I was well convinced of the treason and the misdeeds of these two rascals, but the Carpenter put too much precipitation in the business. I would have liked a interrogation and the revelation of many facts. Instead of to note these facts, blind men Parisian, perhaps will have you left to decay evidence of conspiracy woven against you and while it lent its ministry only to the justice and the Fatherland, which required it, you dishonoured the Lantern”.
“One shows the generation all to reverse and nothing to build. But shouldn't one have destroyed the Bastille before nothing to raise on its site? Already many architect évertue to think a palate worthy of the majestic representatives of the nation the permanent council of the nation being then sedentary in Paris, this city will recover finally, by the transmigration of the offices, this addition of richness, health and plumpness which she did not cease regretting since the king like had duplicated it to create Versailles. This benefit, if large is not only whose Revolution must enrich the capital. As it is not, as well as the others, a city which belongs into clean to its inhabitants; that Paris is rather the common fatherland, the motherland of all the French, it is not any city in the kingdom which is not interested in its splendor and all the provinces will hasten to run there. Industry and the Parisian activity, assisted EC unanimous conspiracy of the remainder of the nation to embellish the metropolis, will create there wonders and Mr. Mercier will not die, I hope for it, without seeing what it wished so much, Paris PORT. Yes, Paris port, and so much port that the galère of Hyéron could there operate and I claim to see reviewing here to Mr. of Fayette, the Parisian infantry, the Parisian cavalry, the Parisian artillery and the Parisian navy”.
