Speech on the state of the Union

The Discours on the state of the Union is an annual event where the President of the United States presents his program for the current year. This speech is carried out with the Congrès of the United States, where the two rooms (the Chambre of the representatives and the Sénat) are joined together.

Most recent took place the January 23rd 2007 towards 21:00 (0200 UTC). It was possible to see it simultaneously on television, or to listen to it with the radio.

History

George Washington gave the first speech on the state of the Union the January 8th 1790 in the town of New York, which at the time was the capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson stopped this practice by not making the speech itself, finding that resembled a monarchy too much (similar to the Speech from the throne).

The speech

The advertisement of the entry of the President is done ceremoniously by the advertisement of the sergeant U.S. House Sergeant At Arms, who shouts, " Mr. Speaker, the President off the United States! " Mister the Announcer, the President of the United States!

In the speech, the President describes in a traditional way the achievements of the administrations over the previous year, also the diary of the year to come in optimistic terms. At different point of the speech, the President uses the terms regularly: " The State off our Union is strong" the Union is strong or a very similar sentence.

Declaration of general policy

This speech is the moment for the Executive power to develop the general framework of its policy. Certain formulas having made date were launched at the time of the speeches on the state of the Union.
