Specialized teaching of the music in France
The Enseignement specialized of the Musique in France is very arranged hierarchically in opposition to the mainstream education exempted in the schools, and theoretical exempted by the universities; in addition to private educations, there exist many different statutes according to the structures, of which some are associative, others emanating from the territorial collectivities, these last being controlled by the body of the Inspectors of the Ministry for the Culture. The National Academies of Area belong to the culture sections of the cities (and not of the areas), and the two National Academies Higher (Lyon and Paris) depend directly on the Ministry for the Culture.
Public and private higher education
See also: University of music and List of the universities of musicThe specialized higher education of the music in France concerns two ministries, the Minister of education Main road (more particularly for the lesson " théoriques" and " musicologiques") and the Ministry for the Culture (more particularly for the training of the experts (interpreters, type-setters, etc). In 2010 the majority of the diplomas will be harmonized in Europe at end to facilitate their recognition and student mobility. The higher education of the music in France will have to adopt European standards in spite of its particularisms.
The installation of a Cycle of one three years duration Professional Higher education sanctioned by a DNSPM, Professional Higher National Diploma of Musician and by a License of music and musicology is effective since the re-entry 2007-2008 in the academies of Paris and Boulogne-Billancourt. The course of the studies is placed under the common responsibility for the Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV) and of these two establishments. The courses take place at the same time at the university and in the academy of assignment. This formation supposes obtaining a DEM (Diploma of musical studies).
The higher national Academies of music and dance (CNSMD of Lyon and Paris): Professional structures of teaching whose mission first is to train the artists of tomorrow, accessible on contest. Obtaining diploma (DFS in Paris and DNESM in Lyon), approved with bac+4, comes to sanction the course of the student. (the DFS has to be replaced by the Higher National Diploma (DNS), delivered by the CNSMD of Paris and Lyon.) There exists also a cycle of improvement, not offering an approved diploma, but a certification by the two establishments.
Forts of their experiment in this field, the Higher National Academies of Music and Dance of Lyon and Paris are engaged in a " large réflexion" on installations to bring to the courses so as to integrate the concept of “License+Master”, in accordance with the declaration of Bologna for the re-entry 2007-2008. This reflection, in the two CNSMD, will lead to the creation of an approved diploma with Bac+5 and to the implementation of ECTS, system European of transfer and accumulation of appropriations. It is not for the moment yet envisaged to set up a third cycle, making it possible to validate a Doctorat homologé in Bac + 8, contrary to the majority of the European countries.
The other diplomas post- DEM, such as the DEMS delivered by the Academy of Paris, or prices of improvement delivered in different the Conservatory national from area (CNR), if they are unanimously recognized in the world of the French musical practice, are not national diplomas and do not profit from a European homologation.

Nonhigher teaching
Teaching nonhigher public
The network of the musical, choreographic and theatrical educational establishments specialized controlled by the State consists of 36 academies to regional radiation (CRR), of 104 academies to departmental radiation (CRD) and of 245 academies with communal or inter-commune radiation (CRC/CRI). These establishments are in their near total of the municipal services managed in direct control.
Organization of teaching
Teaching in the Conservatoires with regional radiation (CRR) and departmental (CRD) is organized in cycles; the passage from one cycle to another is done by an examination, sometimes associated with a continuous assessment.

A reform is in hand aiming to the creation of a professional national diploma higher of musician (DNSPM) delivered at the conclusion of a first cycle of three years higher education by the academies than regional radiation (ex national academies of area). Conventions between these establishments and the university will make it possible to the students to be seen delivering by the latter, in complement of the CNSPM, a general license, thus registering the course of the CRR in the first cycle of the LMD.
