Special reserve of Andranomena

The special Réserve of Andranomena belongs to the network of protected areas of Madagascar. Created by decree on October 28th, 1958, it is located at 30 km in the North-East of Morondava and belonged to the rural district of Bemanonga. It covers a surface of 6420 ha. It is accessible during all the year. The reserve has a wealth in fauna and flora of 80% of endemicity, from where the classification of the reserve like scientific site of interest. The Malagasy population living in the perimeter of the reserve is mainly made up of two dominant ethnos groups: Sakalava and Korao.

Climatic conditions

The zone presents two quite distinct seasons: one hot and rainy season from November to March (February and January being sprinkled more) and a dry season from April at October, causing the drying up of the majority of the courses of eau.
Average annual pluviometry is from 600 to 1.200 Misters the annual average temperature is of 25,1°C, the hottest month being January (27,6°) and the month coldest July (21,3°).

Lakes

Attractive sites where and the water birds frétillent splash such as Angongo, Vivy, Vano, Kapi-drano… framed by the luxuriant vegetation of the dense forest sèche.
Several lakes exist in the reserve.

Landscape

Luxuriant landscape, where one circulates through the clearings under canopée of the baobab trees, and where one can see and appreciate the odd and astonishing forms twin baobab trees, baobab trees in love, male baobab trees… and to let itself rock by the strange whistle the birds.

Flora

  • the dry dense forest forms a continuous solid mass of north towards the south and is intersected by temporary lakes; the species are extremely varied there.
  • the botanical inventory made it possible to count 113 woody species there.
  • 98% of the species of the family of Bombacaceae is consisted three species of Baobab tree ( Adansonia grandidieri , Adansonia rubrostipa and Adansonia zà ).
  • the Hazomalania voyroni is among the species rare and threatened in the area according to its history in the reserve.

Fauna

The faunistic inventory showed a considerable result of importance for the reserve which is a vital space for several species:
  • 11 species of reptiles of which the Pyxis planicauda (Kapi-dolo), endemic room
  • 48 species of oiseaux
  • 7 species of lemurs, easily observable, dont
- 2 diurnal: Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi (Sifaka), Eulemur fulvus rufus (Gidro)
- 5 night: Microcebus berthae (Tilitilivahy) endemic room, Lépilemur ruficaudatus (Boenga), Microcebus murinus (Tsidy), Phaner furcifer (Vakiandry), Mirza coquereli (Kelibeohy)
  • 4 species of endemic rodents including 2 malagasy and 1 endemic local: Hypogeomys antimena (Vositse).
