The Special court for the Sierra Leone (TSSL) is charged to judge the most important persons in charge of the crimes committed during the Civil war of Sierra Leone.
The purpose of the TSSL is to judge them principal persons in charge of Crimes against humanity, War crimes and certain crimes envisaged by right the sierra léonais made since the November 30th 1996 , date of the agreements of Abidjan (Ivory Coast), which had tried, without success, to stop the crisis.
Since the December 7th 2006, the Procureur is the American Stephen J. Rapp which succeeded the British Desmond de Silva C.R., which succeeded itself the American David Mr. Crane.
The TSSL differs from the other courts created by the Safety advice. It is not an international penal court ad hoc . Whereas the international penal courts for ex-Yugoslavia (TPIY) and for Rwanda (TPIR) have their seat respectively with $the Hague and Arusha, the TSSL sits in the country where the crimes were committed. Especially, this court belongs to the legal system sierra leonais, even if it receives an important international support and that the eight judges are international judges. It is also about a hybrid jurisdiction, because it associates international law and national right sierra-léonais.
