Around film

the novelist Howard Fast and the scenario writer Dalton Trumbo had been condemned by the commission of the antiaméricaines activities. Victims of the Maccarthysme, they reflect in their narration all their dashes of human freedom. The scenario comprises many allusions by anticipation to the American history and the political debates of its time: for some, Spartacus is pre-Christian, for others, pre-Communist, etc
- Kirk Douglas, interested by the novel of Fast, decided to produce it and required of Trumbo to adapt it. It was scrambled with the first realizer Anthony Mann, and replaced it by the young person Stanley Kubrick, who finished film. Douglas Trumbo protected very courageously which “had been blacklisté” and which had to start to work on film under the pseudonym of Sam Jackson. At the end of the production of film, the Hollywood black list did not have short any more and Trumbo could be duly credited.
- Spartacus comprises many scenes shocking for their time: visions of mass graves, scenes bloody, sexual allusions…, some of these scenes appear only in the version restored in 1991, like the scene of bath where Crassus makes advances with its Antoninus slave in a dialog with double-direction.
- the film takes freedoms with historical Spartacus. This last was not for example not the chief of the revolt of the slaves, but just one of its more important figures. He would have died in the combat and not crucifié. Only Spartacus and Crassus had a historical existence, the other characters are fictitious.
- With 13 million dollars, the film was the second dearer film of the time after Ben-Hur, which cost 16.
